We are currently growing our Cables Design team and are looking to hire ambitious Cables System Design Engineers, who are ready to take their career to the next level.

As part of this exciting role, you’ll get the chance to work on innovative and varied projects throughout the entire lifecycle - from feasibility and concept through to detailed design, installation supervision, and commissioning of onshore infrastructure. You’ll work across multiple voltage levels working with clients including Transmission System Operators, Distribution Network Operators, and private developers worldwide. This includes working directly on National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade.

Here’s what you will do:

• Contribute to the delivery of full lifecycle cable engineering packages from feasibility studies and concept design through to detailed design, installation support, and commissioning.
• Support with the review complex HV cable system designs, including route development, burial risk assessments, thermal, electromagnetic, and mechanical calculations.
• Undertake cable rating and system studies including ampacity, short circuit forces, thermal stability, and electromagnetic interference analysis.
• Carry out cable pulling, jointing, cleating, and installation feasibility studies.
• Gain exposure to civil, structural, substation and OHL teams to ensure fully integrated solutions.
• Support senior members of the team with third-party inspections and support FAT/SAT, installation, and commissioning activities.
• Support the interface activity with manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors to verify compliance with IEC, CIGRÉ, National Grid TPs, and other international standards.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible?

Here’s what we’re looking for:

• Ideally, you’ll have and Electrical Engineering Degree or at minimum are HNC qualified in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related discipline.
• Some experience in Cable System Design Engineering for HV/EHV transmission and distribution projects. FEED experience is essential.
• Some experience in regulated, quality-assured environments, preferably with National Grid experience. 
• A basic understanding of:
  • Onshore cable routing 
  • Cable pulling and mechanical forces
  • Cable burial risk assessments and protection strategies
  • Electromagnetic, thermal, and stability analysis
  • Cable cleating and short circuit restrain
  • A basic knowledge of national and international standards, including IEC, CIGRÉ, and NG-TPs.
• Ideally experience with:
  • Cable system ECI engineering
  • Cable manufacturing and testing
  • Third-party inspection and verification
• Experience with tools such as CYMCAP, WinCable, AutoCAD, Revit, GIS, and mechanical simulation tools.
