Job Summary
The post-holder is responsible for either working as a solo practitioner or as part of an ambulance crew for the assessment, care, treatment and transportation of emergency, urgent and routine calls; providing advanced clinical interventions, including drug therapies at scene and may administer medication within PGD guidelines. Undertake emergency ‘blue light’ driving and working in a variety of locations including; ambulance/rapid response vehicle, patients’ homes, primary care settings and accident and emergency care departments.
In addition the post-holder will work with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership, guidance and mentorship to other less experienced or clinically qualified colleagues to support the delivery of the highest quality of care out of hospital by competent practitioners.
Support the development of an integrated approach to patient care working with other primary and secondary care providers to maximise the number of patients treated locally and left at home.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical and Patient Care
- Autonomously assess and diagnose within the skills of the Scope of Practice, individual patient needs to ascertain how to treat in accordance with Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Service Liaison Committee (JRCALC) guidance, Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) Code of Professional Practice and local NEAS procedures. This will include the triage of patients in order to prioritise individual needs.
- Communicate with the patient and others to determine, and then use, the correct combination of ambulance equipment, paramedic skills to meet patient requirements.
- Provide care of patients. To plan and implement their care and treatment. To continually evaluate and give advice to patients and others. This will include:
- Handling and administering drugs and controlled drugs.
- Invasive procedures e.g. intravenous cannulation, intubation, needle thoracentesis, external jugular cannulation.
- Cardiac interventions – e.g., manual defibrillation, 12 Lead ECG recognition, interpretation and treatment including the diagnosis of myocardial infarction.
- Ensure a thorough and contemporaneous record is kept of the patient’s care and treatment, and that documentation is completed correctly and promptly.
- Communicate and report patients’ history, condition and treatment to a full range of medical staff including nurses, doctors and consultants.
- Comply with national and local policies and procedures to determine the appropriate treatment and/or destination for the patient, including the initiation of the appropriate care pathway with other healthcare professionals. Should transport to hospital not be required, provide a mobile treatment/care service, that best suits patient needs and continually promoting the Trusts value of ‘Right care, Right place, Right time , by carrying out clinical assessment and treatment to discharge at the patient’s home.
- Responsible for the security of patient’s property, following removal to hospital and the safe handling of patients’ possessions and to hand them over to the appropriate agency.
- Where appropriate, take the responsibility for the recognition of life extinct (ROLE) under JRCALC guidance and Trust guidelines and complete appropriate paperwork, liaise with police and appropriate persons.
- Within your Scope of Practice, maximise the use of appropriate and available alternative pathways of care to minimise patient admission to hospital or attendance at emergency departments.
Vehicle and Environment
- Use ambulance vehicles, equipment, radio, telecommunications and IT equipment, ensuring any defects or malfunctions are reported immediately in line with the Trust reporting procedures. Responsible for the safe use of the ambulance/RRV and all equipment.
- Make dynamic risk of the environment and general situation, having due regard for the health and safety of self and others.
- Where appropriate drive the vehicle in emergency conditions in a safe and appropriate manner using audible and visual warning devices.
- Ensure that advanced driving skills are maintained and whilst driving, ensure compliance with legislation and the Highway Code.
- Ensure station security, health & safety, cleanliness and correct documentation of fuel and store supplies.
- Assist in ambulance/station duties, as required:-
- Daily vehicle/equipment checks
- Cleaning vehicle and equipment
- Station audits
- Decontaminating equipment
- Replenishing stock items/supplies
- Completing paperwork/on line documentation – e.g. incident forms, give police statements, coroners reports and solicitors statements in a timely manner
Administration
- Complete patient and journey documentation in a timely manner, ensuring a readiness to be available for the next patient once handover has taken place.
- Be a proactive leader in your field.
- Ensure swift handover and turnaround times at hospitals.
- Work on either an ambulance or a rapid response vehicle as requested by Control or managers.
- Ensure all Trust policies, procedures and protocols are adhered to at all times.
- Proactively partake in and complete an annual Performance Review.
- Ensure NEAS07’s are appropriately completed.
- Ensure all accidents (vehicle and otherwise) are reported on line prior to leaving at the end of your shift.
- To attend court when required, e.g. coroners, magistrates, crown courts and give evidence or be cross examined under oath.
Training, Education and Development
- Attend performance review and produce evidence to the reviewer.
- Ensure level of knowledge, education and development is maintained to meet the standards required by the Trust.
- Ensure compliance with the requirements for mandatory and refresher training.
- Ensure compliance with regard to Statutory and Mandatory training.
- Actively participate in the Trust’s annual Performance Review process
Professional Registration and Standards
- Maintain current professional registration, e.g., Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC).
- Continue to meet the HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics
- Meet the HCPC Standards for Continuing Professional Development, including maintenance of personal portfolio.
- Continue to meet the HCPC Standards of proficiency that apply to your scope of practice.
- Participate in clinical audit and / or research activities in line with Trust procedures.
- Ensure all controlled drugs audits are completed within designated timescales.
- Comply with clinical protocols / guidelines, e.g. JRCALC Compliance with patient care protocols / guidelines. Promote the protection of children and vulnerable adults by adhering to relevant guidance and procedures.
- Demonstrate professional behaviour at all times. Assist in the promotion of a fair and just culture by being open, honest, supportive and respectful to others. Assist in the coaching and development of others, displaying positive behaviours at all times.
