Cancer Navigator (Digestive Diseases Pathway)

Job summary
Exciting opportunity to join the Digestive Diseases team on a fixed term basis until the end of March 2027. This particular post will be aligned to the UGI and Colorectal specialty, the workload per each tumour site will be proportionate to the numbers of patients in the pathway.

The role will support the trust in providing an effective, caring and compassionate service to patients to optimise their access to cancer services.

This role will work with the clinician and patients through the cancer pathway, supporting a streamlined diagnostic and treatment if required.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work collaboratively across primary and secondary care, third sector organisations, and multidisciplinary teams. With responsibility to provide an effective, caring and compassionate service to patients to optimise their experience.

They will liaise with patients and their relatives and ensure appropriate and timely appointments are secured and any additional tests are organised prior to their imaging via their GP or within the Trust.

They will ensure close collaboration within the specialty to ensure imaging is booked, reports are available, and staging is complete inline with the Faster Diagnosis Standard and Best Practice Timed Pathway.

They will act as patient advocate and facilitator to overcome barriers to timely access to diagnostics and treatments, utilising interpersonal skills and resources across the health service, third sector and local authorities.

Qualification
Essential

• Educated to degree level, working towards a degree or equivalent experience
• GCSE Maths and English Grade C or above, or willing to work towards.

Desirable

• oAttendance at the leadership and development and improvement programme (4.5 days)

Experience
Essential

• Understanding of cancer pathways and have experience in cancer waiting times data requirements.
• Be able to articulate cancer waiting times data requirements and have an ability to translate guidance into practice.
• Strong numerical and statistical skills.
• Ability to work independently, takes responsibility for managing own workload and diary management.
• A high level of accuracy, presentation of information and attention to detail.

Desirable

• Experience of delivering training
• Presentation skills

Knowledge
Essential

• Experience of Cancer Waiting Time Standards
• Experience of direct liaison with patients.
• Ability to prepare data reports as required by clinical teams and Cancer Management team.
• The ability to undertake Audits as required.
• Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Application software experience e.g. Windows, Power Point, and Excel.
• Familiarity with hospital systems and data collection processes.

Desirable

• Ability to deliver presentations on complex or sensitive matters to a wider audience.
• Knowledge of cancer management systems such as; Infoflex and Somerset.
