Medical Laboratory Assistant

Job Description



This is a 6 months FTC. 15 Hours per week. Thursday and Friday. 9.00am - 5.00pm.

Purpose of the post:

To prepare samples for analysis using the current laboratory protocol, to assist Associate Practitioners in maintenance and preparation of equipment.

  • Receive, sort, register and prepare specimens for analysis.
  • Enter patient and test information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Operate laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, automated analysers and pipettes, in accordance with SOPs.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, equipment sterilisation and safe disposal of biological, chemical and sharps waste.
  • Monitor and replenish laboratory reagents and consumables.
  • Prepare and dispatch referral samples to external laboratories.
  • Support quality management activities and comply with laboratory procedures, policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain the secure and confidential handling of patient and laboratory information.
  • Respond to internal enquiries and communicate issues that may impact service delivery.
  • Promote a safe working environment by reporting incidents, hazards and laboratory deficiencies.
  • Deliver excellent customer service and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, customers and service users.
  • Support staff training, maintain competency records and participate in ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

    at GCSE/A level or equivalent.
  • Must have a good general education and must be numerate and literate with good command of spoken and written English
  • Scientific knowledge.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office and good keyboard skills
  • Highly Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Data entry skills.
  • Able to communicate and work within a team.
  • Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations.
  • Good timekeeping and attendance record.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • Ability to work to deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow procedure.
