Specialist Community Public Health Nurse Student (SCPHN) Starting September 2026
Have you ever considered a role as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) in Health Visiting or School Nursing?
Are you motivated to learn and develop knowledge, skills and critical abilities to provide leadership and innovation in schools and local communities? Would you enjoy the rewards and challenges of leading new ways of working and innovation in preventative health in the community?
As a SCPHN you can make a real difference to children, young people, families and communities. You will play a fundamental role in the development of the Healthy Child Programme 0-19 across the BNSSG footprint, promoting development, emotional health and well-being of the child or young person. You will support parents/carers and tackle important public health issues whilst focusing on the child or young person.
This is a one-year fixed term contract & fully funded post to undertake defined project training and is for 37.5 hours a week. Please note this will also be study at Masters level.
For the practice and placement element of this role you will be aligned to a team within one of the localities across BNSSG. Whilst you will be in one of these areas for the first part of your training, you will be in another locality for the later part of the training period. This is supportive of your experiential learning and exposure to wider communities within our geography.
As a SCPHN student you will be an NMC Registered Nurse or Midwife and will complete a 52-week programme at Masters level to gain the professional qualification of SCPHN (50% in practice and 50% theory lead by UWE). Included in the 52 weeks the student will gain practical experience and exposure to a range of experiences within the service.
The practice assessor will assess achievement of overall proficiency for entry to the SCPHN part of the register. Contact with families is in their school, home and other community venues and you will be required to attend the university for academic purposes.
Students will have access to additional learning within the organisation including, learning sets and role specific training alongside the public health nursing teams.
What Our Colleagues Say About Us
‘’ I really enjoyed the SCPHN course and it helped me to think more broadly about Public Health and the role of health visiting in supporting families. No two days are the same as all visits are so personal to the family I am working with. I also enjoy working with families and helping them to navigate the support available to them in the wider community. ’’ Current Sirona Health Visitor
‘’ My role is varied each day and allows me to work with children and young people to identify what matters to them, give information and signpost to the right support. I found the course enjoyable and would recommend it to anyone interested. ‘’ Current Sirona School Nurse
