Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist - Echocardiography

Job summary
The candidate will participate in delivering the echo service with the cardiology department at North Middlesex hospital. The successful candidate is expected to have relevant NHS experience n cardiac physiology and hold a BSE or equivalent accreditation in TTE. The individual will work alongside the team of 6 other BSE accredited echocardiographers, ETP and registrar trainees , 3 imaging consultants and with the wider cardiac physiology team to perform transthoracic echocardiograms as well as assist with stress and transoesophageal echocardiograms. As a teaching hospital the successful candidate will be expected to support our trainee echocardiographers to achieve their BSE accreditation. The echo service is open 8am to 6pm on weekdays and also provide inpatient/outpatient weekend service. The individual will be expected to participate in this comprehensive service and flexible working pattern will be considered.

Job responsibilities

• Personally perform and report echocardiograms to a high standard,meeting BSE guidelines and departmental local standards
• Work alongside the lead cardiac physiologist to provide structured training to junior cardiac physiologists and doctors with a view to their subsequent BSE accreditation
• Maintain own BSE accreditation by ensuring appropriate CPD is up to date and course requests highlighted to the Head of Department in a timely manner
• To provide an efficient running of the technical service by prioritising daily workloads
• To maintain standards of technical competency in the provision of non-invasive, technical cardiac procedures
• Remain up to date with current evidence in echocardiography
• Ensures that all echo studies are accurately recorded in our reporting system and outcome appropriately on the patient electronic record
• Ensure smooth running of outpatient echo clinics so that patients are seen on time and receive a high quality of care.
• To jointly oversee the day to day running of the echo service, ensuring that all equipment is operational, clean and that stock levels are adequate
• Support inpatient ward echo service including portable echoes andurgent/emergency service to intensive and acute care units.
• Closely liaise with medical staff to assist patients management if required based on echo findings.
• Participate in the local echo MDT discussions
• Assist clinicians in running the advanced echo services such as stress TOE, contrast and bubbles echocardiograms
• With sufficient training and support, work towards supporting the physiologist led valve clinics.
• Use clinical audit to monitor, maintain and develop clinical practice.
• To remain up to date with latest trends in clinical physiology translating these into practice and transferring this knowledge to staff
• Comply with health and safety policies at all times.
• Ensure appropriate infection control & hand hygiene regulations areadhered too.
• Establish good relationships and communications with staff at all levels of the organisation.
• Participate in departmental audits, stock checks and medicines expiry checks

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

• BSc Clinical Physiology (or equivalent Science subject)
• BSE Level 2 TTE accreditation
• Registered / qualify for registration with RCC

Desirable

• Postgraduate qualification (MSc)

Experience

• Substantial post BSc qualification experience as a Cardiac Physiologist/echocardiographer
• Good understanding of echocardiography techniques with independent ability to report scans to a high standard
• Exposure to complex cases and ability to accurately assess their management
• Possession of audit process knowledge & Clinical Governance processes
