Maintenance Officer
As a Maintenance Officer in our Estates team, you'll play a key role in keeping critical hospital facilities running safely and efficiently. Your work will directly support patient care by ensuring essential engineering systems and services are reliable, compliant, and responsive. You'll be part of a team that keeps vital infrastructure operating behind the scenes, providing specialist technical knowledge of engineering systems, plant, and building services across the hospital estate. As the day-to-day contact for client representatives and stakeholders, you will manage planned and reactive maintenance to supporting capital works and safety systems. Your contribution will create a safe environment for patients, visitors, and colleagues - delivering a positive impact on communities every day. What you'll do as Maintenance Officer Leadership and Supervision
- Manage and supervise a multi-skilled maintenance workforce across planned and reactive activities
- Provide direction and support to colleagues, always ensuring effective team performance
- Ensure shift patterns are adequately resourced, including providing cover where required
- Supervise colleagues during out-of-hours periods to maintain service continuity Maintenance and Operations Delivery
- Oversee and coordinate planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance activities
- Ensure all maintenance tasks are completed in line with contractual and operational requirements
- Respond to plant and equipment failures, ensuring timely and effective resolution
- Support emergency repairs and provide resilience through additional working hours where needed
- Maintain continuity of service through effective communication and shift handovers Technical and Engineering Support
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
- Undertake Authorised Person (AP) duties within area of competence (e.g. ventilation, electrical systems)
- Support inspection, commissioning, testing, validation, and calibration of systems and equipment Compliance and Safety
- Ensure all activities comply with Health Technical Memorandums (HTMs), statutory regulations, and safety standards
- Implement and monitor permit-to-work systems and safe systems of work
- Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring all colleagues and contractors work safely
- Carry communication devices and participate in emergency response activities as required Asset and Systems Management
- Manage maintenance activities to ensure assets meet contractual and operational requirements
- Use CAFM (Computer-Aided Facilities Management) systems to manage work orders, records, and asset data
- Ensure accurate completion of logbooks, reports, and certification documentation Contractors, Materials, and Resources
- Coordinate contractors, materials, and services to ensure efficient service delivery
- Ensure availability of goods and support services required for maintenance activities
- Support cost-effective procurement and use of resources Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
- Act as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders and client representatives
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, management, and external bodies as required
- Liaise with environmental and energy teams to support efficiency initiatives Planning, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement
- Support CAFM planning and maintenance scheduling processes
- Contribute to reporting, including NHS and contractual requirements
- Analyse maintenance data and provide technical feedback to improve service delivery
- Carry out risk assessments for ad hoc tasks and ensure safe implementation
- Maintain working knowledge of key systems including HVAC, fire alarms, medical gases, and control systems, This role requires membership of the PVG Scheme, which involves a detailed check of spent and unspent convictions and other relevant information to ensure safeguarding compliance. - City and Guilds, NVQ, or equivalent qualification in an engineering, electrical, or mechanical discipline
- BTEC, ONC, or equivalent in engineering services, or significant relevant experience (typically 5 years)
- Completion of an appropriate apprenticeship in a relevant engineering disciplineInstitute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 1 or equivalent supervisory management training
- Competent Person status in one or more specialist areas (e.g. low voltage electrical systems, boiler and pressure systems, piped medical gases, sterilisation systems)
- Ability to achieve Authorised Person (AP) status in relevant disciplines (e.g. high voltage, boilers, medical gases) within a defined timeframe
- Experience in a Hospital maintenance or engineering role
- Experience of managing or supervising colleagues, including involvement in recruitment
- Experience handling employee relations matters such as absence management, disciplinary processes, and team performance
- Experience working with trade unions and maintaining effective working relationships
