Learning Resources Centre Assistant

We are seeking to appoint a passionate and imaginative individual to help instil a love of reading within our popular and well-resourced Learning Resources Centre (LRC). The LRC is in constant use throughout the day and the centre is well supported by a fantastic team of student helpers. The successful candidate will be able to build positive professional relationships with students and supervise the learning environment and resources accordingly.

The post holder will work closely with our Learning Resources Centre Manager and be responsible for helping to organise library and information resources to support teaching and learning throughout the school, facilitate independent learning and promote and reward reading for pleasure. The post holder will help to promote the love of reading and research (including digital) and will be expected to support library-based events and activities.

Hours: 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday, term time only

Monday, Wednesday & Friday 10.00am to 2.00pm

Tuesday & Thursday 10.30am to 2.30pm

Main responsibilities will include:

• Providing guidance and assistance to students and staff on information retrieval and reading materials to encourage the development of independent learners

• Promoting an atmosphere conducive to reading and learning and supervising silent Sixth Form private study

• Supervising LRC users during the day and after school, ensuring that the centre is an effective learning space at all times and challenging poor behaviour when required

• Maintaining and recording accurately the use of library resources, including digital

• Effective use of library management software

• Assisting with maintaining a good range of fiction for all reading abilities and ages to help promote literacy

• Inspiring students to read widely

• Engaging with national and international events (e.g. World Book Day, International Women’s Day, Anti-Bullying Week, Black History Season, Pride, etc.) and promoting awareness and interest in these events via the LRC resources

• Contribute to the selection of resources to encourage diversity, whilst promoting an awareness of world, local, social & health issues

• Helping with organising and training the team of voluntary student helpers to support the day-to-day running of the LRC

• Provide support with IT equipment and printer

• Register ad-hoc students as and when required

• Any other duties as deemed reasonable and necessary by the Learning Resources Centre Manager

The successful candidate will:

• Possess GCSE or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English at 4-9 (A*-C)

• Have experience in a similar role

• Be computer literate with strong MS Office skills

• Have a strong knowledge and love of children’s literature

• Be compassionate and caring with an understanding of students with SEN

• Have the skills and confidence to be able to instruct groups of young people and manage behaviour

• Be resilient and assertive when required

• Promote self-esteem and confidence and help students to become emotionally healthy

• Have the ability to communicate effectively with all members of the school community and remain calm when under pressure

• Be positive and flexible, with excellent organisational skills and the ability to use your initiative

• Be able to adapt and react within a fast-paced environment, managing conflicting priorities

• Have excellent attention to detail, with the ability to work accurately and independently

• Be able to solve problems, exercise responsible judgement when appropriate and make decisions

• Understand the need for high levels of confidentiality, discretion and integrity in the school environment

• Have the ability to work individually and as part of a team within a busy environment

• Be an enthusiastic, committed and ambitious team player, open to learning and professional development

• Be a strong presence with a hardworking and proactive approach
