The Opportunity

We are seeking an ambitious and technically skilled Design & Technology (DT) Teacher to join an Ofsted-rated 'Outstanding' secondary academy . In this role, you will inspire students to bridge the gap between creative imagination and functional reality, utilizing the city’s rich engineering legacy to prepare the next generation of designers, engineers, and architects.

The Department & Creative Culture

• You will join a high-performing Design & Technology faculty equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including CAD/CAM technology, 3D printers, laser cutters, and traditional workshops for wood, metal, and plastics.

• The department fosters a "studio-discourse" atmosphere, where students are encouraged to critique existing products and iterate their own designs through rigorous prototyping.

Core Responsibilities

1. Exemplary Instruction: Delivering high-challenge DT lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE), with significant opportunities for A-Level Product Design or vocational pathways for suitably qualified candidates.

2. Technical Mastery: Leading sophisticated workshop sessions—from safe tool operation and joinery to the application of smart materials and electronics—ensuring students develop precise technical and manual skills.

3. Design Thinking: Systematically teaching the mechanics of the design process, including client-focused briefs, iterative sketching, and high-quality portfolio development.

4. Health & Safety Leadership: Maintaining an impeccable standard of workshop safety, ensuring all students are trained in the correct and responsible use of machinery and equipment.

5. Innovation Advocacy: Coordinating extra-curricular initiatives, such as "Formula 24" racing, robotics clubs, or sustainable design challenges, to promote a culture of invention across the academy.

The Successful Candidate We are looking for a subject authority who believes that Design & Technology is the key to solving the functional challenges of the 21st century. Requirements include:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honours degree in Design & Technology, Product Design, Engineering, or a related field.

• Proven Track Record: Evidence of delivering exceptional learning outcomes at GCSE and A-Level, with a deep understanding of AQA, Edexcel, or OCR assessment objectives.

• Technical Versatility: A teacher who is as comfortable with traditional hand tools as they are with digital design software and automated manufacturing.

• Reflective Practice: A professional committed to continuous growth, eager to participate in collaborative planning and the development of world-class teaching resources.
