ARBORIST TEAM LEADER JOBS in SUSSEX
Location: New West Sussex/Hampshire depot — covering West Sussex and surrounding areas
Basis: Full-time, employed (PAYE)
Hours: Monday to Friday, typical site hours 07:00 – 17:00
Salary: £45,000-£55,000 dependent on experience
Reports to: Operations Manager
THE ROLE
We are opening a new depot in West Sussex/Hampshire, and we are looking for an Arborist Team Leader to run the team out of it from day one.
This is not a role where you turn up and follow someone else's plan. You will be the person on the ground — leading a three-man team, running the working day, setting the standard on site and dealing with the client face to face. You will have the Operations Manager behind you and the full weight of the group's systems, plant and compliance support around you, but the team, the site and the quality of the finished job are yours.
Because the depot is new, you will have a genuine say in how it runs. If you have been waiting for a role where you build something rather than inherit it, this is that role.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
- Leading a three-man team on commercial tree surgery works across West Sussex and the surrounding area
- Planning and running the working day — job order, access, traffic management, and getting the team away on time
- Carrying out the site-specific risk assessment and briefing the team before work starts, and reassessing on any change of circumstances on site
- Climbing and dismantling, alongside ground work and machine operation as the job demands
- Towing and operating the chipper and tipper safely and legally, and keeping both maintained and serviceable
- Completing daily check sheets, timesheets and job records accurately through our job management system
- Dealing with clients and members of the public calmly and professionally
- Bringing on the climbers and groundsmen in your team, including new starters
- Reporting plant defects, near misses and incidents promptly
- Working to our ISO 9001 management system

Preferred Skills
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR — ESSENTIAL
- NPTC / City & Guilds chainsaw and climbing certificates — CS30, CS31, CS38 and CS39, or awarding-body equivalents
- Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry (EFAW+F), in date
- Valid CSCS card
- Full UK driving licence with B+E (trailer) entitlement
- Proven experience leading or running a tree surgery team, with the confidence to make the call on site
- Sound working knowledge of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and LOLER 1998 as they apply to climbing and rigging, and of BS 3998:2010 tree work practice
- A real commitment to safety — your own, your team's and the public's
- Presentable, reliable, and able to represent the company in front of clients
DESIRABLE
- IPAF 1b / 3a MEWP operation
- Utility arb units (UA301 – UA305), or experience on utility and highways contracts
- Chapter 8 / NRSWA signing, lighting and guarding
- Stump grinding, and experience around tracked or mechanised equipment
- Level 2 or Level 3 Arboriculture qualification, or working towards one

We specialise in mechanised arboriculture and high-compliance site clearance for Tier 1 principal contractors, alongside commercial forestry, ecology and tree surgery.
