Minor Injuries Clinical Practitioner

Job summary
The post holder will work autonomously as an experienced Minor Injuries Clinical Practitioner, delivering high-quality assessment, diagnosis, treatment and discharge for patients of all ages presenting with minor injuries. The practitioner will function as an independent clinician within agreed protocols, demonstrating advanced decision-making and clinical expertise.

The role supports safe, effective, patient-centred care within the UTC and contributes to service improvement, clinical governance and the development of junior staff.

Main duties of the job
  • Clinical Practice
  • Practise autonomously as an independent clinical practitioner within the Urgent Treatment Centre, managing patients presenting with undifferentiated minor injuries and minor illness.
  • Undertake comprehensive clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral, and discharge without direct medical supervision, in line with agreed protocols and competencies.
  • Request, perform, and interpret diagnostic investigations, including radiological imaging (X-ray), in accordance with IRMER and local protocols.
  • Perform clinical procedures including (but not limited to): suturing and wound closure, plastering and splint application, minor joint or fracture management, venepuncture and cannulation.
  • Prescribe medicines independently (where qualified) or administer medicines under Patient Group Directions (PGDs).
  • Provide Immediate Life Support (ILS) to adults and children, including defibrillation where required.
  • Work within UTC streaming and escalation pathways, including referral to Emergency Department, GP services, community services, and specialist teams as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical records in line with professional, organisational, and information governance standards.

Bank Minor Injuries Clinical Practitioner

Summary

Key Responsibilities

Urgent Treatment Centre & Patient Flow Responsibilities
  • Support effective patient flow within the UTC by timely assessment, treatment, escalation, and discharge decisions.
  • Identify and escalate clinical risk appropriately in line with UTC escalation policies.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues including nurses, paramedics, GPs, operational staff, and senior clinicians to ensure safe and effective service delivery.
  • Contribute to maintaining service standards during periods of increased demand.
Education and Professional Development
  • Act as a mentor and educator to support the learning and development of junior staff and students where applicable.
  • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) and maintain up-to-date clinical skills and competencies.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
Governance, Safety, and Compliance
  • Adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Code of Conduct.
  • Take personal responsibility for promoting a safe environment and safe patient care by identifying and reporting risks, incidents, and near misses.
  • Ensure compliance with PELC policies, including infection prevention and control, safeguarding, equal opportunities, and confidentiality (GDPR).
  • Use resources efficiently, in accordance with PELCs Standing Financial Instructions.
  • Undertake alternative duties as reasonably directed during significant incidents or emergencies, in line with the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.

Qualities, Skills & Abilities
Essential
  • Comprehensive range of clinical skills relevant to role
  • Competent in physical examination of ENT, Eye, GI, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Neurological, Skin, and Musculoskeletal systems
  • Skilled in suturing and wound management
  • Ability to work autonomously and prioritise effectively
  • Capable of safe and effective delegation
  • Awareness of professional boundaries and adherence to NMC/HCPC standards
  • Effective communication skills (verbal, written, electronic)
  • Empathetic approach to patient care
  • Strong teamwork and MDT collaboration skills
  • Understanding of high standards in Customer Care
Experience
Essential
  • Minimum 2 year post-qualification as an Emergency Practitioner (EP)
  • Experience at Band 6/7 in Urgent and Emergency Care
  • Proven autonomous practice in assessment and management of undifferentiated conditions
Desirable
  • Experience in audit and service development
  • Proven ability to prioritise workload with minimal supervision
  • Experience mentoring staff and students
Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Level 1 Nurse (NMC) OR HCPC Registered Paramedic / Physiotherapist
  • Minor Injuries qualification (Level 6 or above)
  • Advanced Physical Assessment qualification (Level 6 or above)
  • X-ray interpretation (IRMER certified)
  • Image interpretation (Red Dot Course)
  • Independent Non-Medical Prescriber
Desirable
  • Management / Leadership qualification
  • Evidence of CPD or training at Masters level
  • MSc in Advanced Practice
  • Mentorship qualification
