Mechanics Tutor – Milton Keynes

Turn practical skills into confidence, independence and future careers.

SENDhelp is recruiting a practical, engaging and resilient Mechanics Tutor to join a specialist SEND setting in Milton Keynes, working with young people aged 9–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with experience in motor vehicle mechanics, automotive repair, engineering or vocational training who wants to take their industry knowledge beyond the workshop and use it to inspire the next generation.

As a Mechanics Tutor, you'll do much more than teach young people how things work. You'll use practical learning to build confidence, encourage problem-solving and help pupils develop skills that could lead towards college, apprenticeships, training and future employment.

About the young people you'll support

Working as a Mechanics Tutor in Milton Keynes, you'll support pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), primarily relating to Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.

Some pupils may also have additional needs including:

Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
ADHD
Speech, language and communication needs
Moderate learning difficulties
Emotional regulation and mental health needs
Behaviour that can be challenging or distressed
Gaps in education or previous difficulties engaging with traditional classroom learning

For some young people, sitting behind a desk simply isn't where they learn best.

Practical, hands-on vocational learning can be the thing that finally gets a young person excited about education.

Mechanics provides opportunities to develop problem-solving, teamwork, concentration, communication and employability skills while giving pupils something tangible to take pride in.

Your role as a Mechanics Tutor

As the Mechanics Tutor, you'll create engaging and structured practical sessions that allow pupils to develop their mechanical knowledge and skills safely.

Depending on your experience and the curriculum delivered, responsibilities could include:

Planning and delivering engaging practical mechanics and motor vehicle sessions
Teaching pupils basic vehicle maintenance, mechanical principles and workshop skills
Demonstrating the correct and safe use of tools and equipment
Teaching practical skills such as routine maintenance, inspections and basic repairs appropriate to pupils' abilities
Adapting activities for different learning levels and SEND needs
Breaking complex tasks into manageable, achievable steps
Connecting practical learning with maths, English, problem-solving and employability skills
Establishing clear workshop routines, expectations and professional boundaries
Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and positive behaviour
Building positive relationships with young people who may previously have struggled to engage with education
Monitoring progress and celebrating both practical and personal achievements
Maintaining high standards of workshop health and safety
Working alongside teachers, Learning Support Assistants and the wider SEND team

Safety, patience and positive relationships will be central to your role. You'll provide pupils with the structure they need while giving them the opportunity to become increasingly independent.

From the workshop to the classroom?

You don't necessarily need to have followed a traditional teaching career to make an excellent Mechanics Tutor.

We're keen to hear from people with backgrounds including:

Motor vehicle mechanics
Vehicle maintenance and repair
Automotive engineering
Motorsport
Mechanical engineering
Workshop supervision
Apprenticeship training
Further education or vocational tutoring

If you've ever trained an apprentice, shown a junior technician how to complete a job, supervised someone in a workshop or patiently explained a mechanical problem to a customer, you've already developed skills that can transfer into education.

Relevant mechanical, automotive or motor vehicle qualifications and hands-on industry experience would be highly desirable. Previous tutoring, training or assessing experience would also be advantageous.

Above all, we're looking for someone who can combine practical credibility with patience, resilience, clear boundaries and the ability to build rapport with young people.

Why work through SENDhelp?

SENDhelp specialises in SEND recruitment and understands that some of the best people working in specialist education haven't necessarily spent their entire careers in schools.

As a Mechanics Tutor working through SENDhelp, you'll benefit from:

Competitive PAYE pay with no hidden umbrella-company deductions
A dedicated SEND specialist consultant throughout your placement
Access to 400+ free online training courses to develop your SEND knowledge
Support throughout registration, compliance and placement
Opportunities to build valuable specialist education experience
Long-term opportunities across SEND and alternative education
Support when transferring your industry experience into an educational setting
Could you be our next Mechanics Tutor?

Imagine using the skills you've built throughout your career to help a young person discover what they're capable of.

The first successful repair. The first time they confidently use a tool. The moment they solve a mechanical problem independently. Or the point when they realise that their interest in cars and engineering could actually become a career.

Those moments matter.

If you're an experienced Mechanics Tutor or a skilled automotive professional ready to bring your expertise into education, we want to hear from you.

Apply today for this Mechanics Tutor opportunity in Milton Keynes and use your workshop experience to help young people build skills for their future.

Take the next step in your career as a Mechanics Tutor and make a genuine difference to young people in Milton Keynes.

As a specialist SEND recruiter, child safety and welfare is our number one priority. That is why we conduct thorough checks on all our candidates, and ensure that they abide by our Candidate Code of Conduct.

All Candidates will be required to provide an Enhanced DBS that is actively registered on the Update Service, or apply for one as part of the onboarding process. This is in addition to other mandatory compliance checks in line with the DfE guidelines. For further information please see our Safer Recruitment Policy.

SENDhelp is an equal opportunities employer.
