Newborn Hearing Screener

Job summary
An opportunity has arisen to work within the South East Wales Region of Newborn Hearing Screening Wales, an All-Wales programme, which provides a uniform service of high quality within an All-Wales policy and to All-Wales standards and protocols.

Based at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff you will work as part of a team participating in the hearing screening of newborn babies. You will undertake the full range of newborn hearing screening duties both in a hospital and community setting.

The post is for 37.5 hours per week, where you will work a set rota that includes a 4 hour Saturday morning shift each week. A copy of the rota can be provided on request to ensure that you are able to commit to these working arrangements.

Main duties of the job
Duties include communicating with the parents throughout the process, baby handling, use of screening equipment and accurately recording clinical and test data relevant to the screening process, therefore, good communication skills and experience of using a computer are essential. You must be a confident and reliable individual and possess the ability to work well under pressure.

Although the base site will be at the University Hospital of Wales, you will also be required to work shifts at other South Wales hospital sites on a regular basis and to run clinics in the community. Therefore, the successful candidate will need the ability to regularly travel between and work at other sites within the region as needed.

There is a mandatory requirement to undertake Level 3 Accredited Learning. On completion of this and subject to all criteria being met, you will continue in your job role on a permanent contract with PHW at the designated pay scale.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential

• Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent experience (including GCSE grade A-C in English Language); or equivalent qualification.

Desirable

• ECDL or other computer skill qualification
• Evidence of recent CPD

Experience
Essential

• Experience of and confident in using a computer for data entry.
• Experience of working within a customer/client facing role.
• Confident in following protocols (e.g. screening delivery, fault finding on equipment).

Desirable

• Experience of working with children and families
• Experience of working in the NHS
• Experience of administration/clerical systems
• Experience of supporting training of other colleagues
• Experience of post natal ward/SCBU working patterns at other local hospital sites
