The Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled, organised and proactive Science Laboratory Technician to support the effective and safe operation of our Science provision, while also providing technical support to our developing Design & Technology and Art departments.

This is an excellent opportunity to join Smart Vision School at an important stage of its development. As our Secondary School grows towards GCSE provision, practical Science will play an increasingly important role within our curriculum. The successful candidate will help establish the systems, resources and high standards required to support high-quality practical learning across Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The role will primarily support Science, alongside technical and practical support for Design & Technology and Art. Full training will be provided on Design & Technology machinery, so previous experience with specific workshop machinery is not essential.

We are looking for someone who takes real ownership of their working environment: organised, safety-conscious, practical and able to anticipate what teachers need to deliver excellent practical lessons.

Key Responsibilities – Science

The Science Laboratory Technician will:

* Prepare and organise laboratory equipment, apparatus, materials, solutions and specimens for Biology, Chemistry and Physics practical lessons.

* Work closely with Science teachers to prepare practical activities, demonstrations and experiments.

* Support teachers and students during practical sessions, ensuring equipment and materials are used safely and appropriately.

* Help develop the practical Science provision as the school prepares for GCSE courses and future external examinations.

* Support the continued development and set-up of Science laboratory facilities, including equipment commissioning, storage systems and stock organisation.

* Conduct regular safety and operational checks of laboratory equipment and report damaged, defective or malfunctioning items.

* Clean, maintain and undertake appropriate minor repairs to laboratory equipment, including microscopes, power supplies and electrical apparatus.

* Maintain accurate inventories and ensure appropriate levels of equipment, chemicals and consumables are available.

* Ensure the safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals, biological materials and other laboratory substances in accordance with relevant safety procedures.

* Maintain an exceptionally clean, organised and safe laboratory environment.

* Ensure laboratories are appropriately prepared before lessons and returned to a safe and organised condition afterwards.

* Support practical examination requirements as the school's external examination provision develops.

Design & Technology and Art Support

The successful candidate will also:

* Prepare materials, tools and consumables required for practical Design & Technology and Art lessons.

* Support teachers with the organisation and preparation of practical activities.

* Undertake routine cleaning, maintenance and safety checks of workshop tools, machinery and studio equipment.

* Report faults, damage or safety concerns promptly.

* Support the safe use of workshop machinery, tools and studio equipment.

* Maintain appropriate stock levels and support the ordering and replenishment of materials and consumables.

* Help maintain clean, organised and safe workshop and studio environments.

* Develop their technical knowledge of Design & Technology equipment through training provided by the school.

Prior experience supporting Design & Technology or Art would be advantageous but is not essential.

Health & Safety

Safety is a fundamental part of this role.

The successful candidate will maintain the highest standards of laboratory and workshop safety and will ensure that chemicals, equipment, machinery and materials are stored, maintained, used and disposed of appropriately.

They will maintain relevant safety documentation and records and work closely with teaching staff and school leadership to identify and address potential hazards.

The successful candidate must be confident in challenging unsafe practice and proactive in ensuring that practical learning environments remain safe for students and staff.

General Responsibilities

The Science Laboratory Technician will:

* Work collaboratively with Science, Design & Technology and Art teachers to ensure the smooth delivery of practical learning.

* Maintain accurate inventories, equipment registers, servicing records and relevant safety documentation.

* Support the ordering, receiving, checking and appropriate storage of equipment and materials.

* Liaise with suppliers and external servicing providers where required.

* Support practical elements of extracurricular activities, enrichment opportunities and school events.

* Contribute positively to the wider life and development of Smart Vision School.

* Undertake other appropriate technical duties as reasonably required by the Head of Science or school leadership.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will ideally have:

* A Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Science, Laboratory Technology, Engineering or a related field.

* Previous experience as a Laboratory Technician, Science Technician or Laboratory Assistant, preferably within a school or educational environment.

* Good knowledge of laboratory equipment, apparatus and practical procedures across Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

* A strong understanding of laboratory health and safety, including the safe handling, storage and disposal of chemicals and materials.

* Experience maintaining laboratory inventories, equipment registers and technical documentation.

* A practical, hands-on approach and confidence working with scientific equipment.

* Strong organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

* The ability to plan ahead and prioritise competing requirements across different departments.

* The ability to work independently while also being an effective member of a wider team.

* Good communication skills and the ability to work positively with both adults and young people.

* A willingness to undertake training in Design & Technology machinery and equipment.

* Experience supporting practical GCSE Science or external examinations would be advantageous.

* Previous experience supporting Design & Technology workshops or Art studios would be desirable but is not essential.
