Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated midwife to support women and birthing people with epilepsy through a dedicated caseloading role. This post has been developed in line with the delivery of the Maternal Medicine Care Bundle, with a focus on improving outcomes for this group of women and birthing people. You will provide continuity of carer throughout the antenatal and postnatal periods, building strong, trusting relationships with women, birthing people and their families. Where service needs and workload allow, you may also contribute to the provision of intrapartum care. The successful candidate will demonstrate:

- Extensive knowledge and experience in caring for women and birthing people with epilepsy
- A compassionate, personalised approach to care
- A strong commitment to delivering evidence-based practice
- The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including obstetricians, neurologists, epilepsy nurse specialists and other healthcare professionals
- Provide antenatal and postnatal continuity of carer to a designated caseload of women and birthing people
- Support for multidisciplinary team clinics - antenatal and pre-conception clinic
- Facilitate Midwife-led antenatal education clinics.
- Providing a point of contact for those with epilepsy during pregnancy.
- Refer to obstetric led clinics where care has deviated outside of midwifery led epilepsy care
- Plan and implement high quality, evidence-based plans for delivery for a designated cohort of women in accordance with local guidance
- Being a point of contact for maternity wards and other staff who care for women with epilepsy, within the inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Education for student midwives, and other mandatory training for midwives and doctors.
- Inpatient review for women with epilepsy during pregnancy and on maternity wards.
- Implementing The Maternal Care Bundle (MCB) within the multidisciplinary team.
- Complete electronic maternity alerts and work towards automated referral triggers from coded maternity diagnoses in neurology.
- Updating policies and guidelines in relation to epilepsy and pregnancy to include national guidance, such as from NICE.

- Provide expert specialist knowledge and resources for care for women and birthing people with epilepsy during the antenatal, postnatal and intrapartum period.
- The specialist midwife works autonomously within midwifery practice in line with local defined practices
- Provide some aspects of intrapartum care to women where service needs allow. This aligns to providing personalised care and may be planned in collaboration with the multidisciplinary (MDT) team.
- Provide postnatal care to women with diabetes including sharing of relevant care of the next pregnancy information
- Provide continuity of carer during the antenatal period to a designated cohort of pregnant women and birthing people with epilepsy
- Provide targeted antenatal education to a designated cohort of pregnant people
- Lead on specialist midwifery-led antenatal clinics focusing on the care of women with epilepsy
- Lead on antenatal management plans for birthing attending specialist midwifery led epilepsy clinic
- For independent nurse/midwife prescribers, prescribe medications in line with local guidance and NMC code of conduct
- Perform ultrasound scan reviews, planning for care in line with local guidance
- Education for those pregnant people with epilepsy, with epilepsy specialist nurse support
