Research Technician in Soil Ecology

Company: The University of Manchester
Location: Oxford, Oxfordshire
Job Type: Temporary
Salary: £23.33k - £26.24k per annum
Job Description

We wish to appoint an enthusiastic Research Technician to work on a NERC project on “Disentangling mechanisms of co-adaptation between trees and soil food webs in response to environmental perturbations”. We hypothesise that the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and drought on carbon flux from trees to their co-adapted soil food webs is dependent on the pathway of carbon flow; i.e. either through symbiotic ectomycorrhizal fungi or plant litter.

You will work closely with collaborators at the University of Birmingham and Aix-Marseille University, France, to:

1) Assist in maintaining field experiments on forest plots and in large-scale climate change manipulations in the UK and France. At these sites, you will also assist in quantification of soil food webs and key ecosystem processes

2) Maintain experiments designed to identify how plants interact with soil food webs, and undertake analyses of soil food web (mesofauna and microorganisms) composition

3) Support the team in the use of stable isotopes to quantify carbon flux to food webs in response to drought and elevated atmospheric concentrations of CO2

Applicants should have experience in aspects of soil ecology that may include identification of soil mesofauna, chemical and biological analysis of soils and plants, stable isotopes and relevant analytical equipment.

The successful applicant will be part of the well-equipped and highly research-active Soil and Ecosystem Ecology Laboratory at Manchester.
