Entry Criteria for a Specialty Doctor:
A doctor appointed to this grade: shall have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council (GMC);

And

• shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a less than full-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme or specialty registrar locum appointment for training (LAT);

Or

• shall have equivalent training, experience or competencies, either in the UK or overseas.

Post Summary:

This is a fixed term 18-month full-time Specialty Doctor post, in Breast Cancer.

There are 900 new incidences of breast cancer each year in Lothian of which 70% are HR+/HER2ve. The University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian require additional breast cancer workforce to be able to deal with the significantly increased workload to provide high level service, patient satisfaction and patient improved outcomes. To address the existing capacity constraints, it has been identified that the addition of a Specialist Doctor within the breast cancer medical oncology service will enhance system robustness, particularly with the expansion of innovative therapies. Timely intervention in cases of early Breast Cancer often results in a higher probability of successful treatment and a reduction in mortality rates. As such, we envisage that the inclusion of a Specialist Doctor to support the breast cancer medical oncology service. There will be a 70% NHS clinical commitment delivering weekly clinics and 30% academic commitments both under consultant supervision.

The breast medical oncology service is responsible for treatment of patients from across the SCAN region. There is a weekly MDT and multiple new patient and follow-up clinics at the Western General Hospital where oncology patients from Lothian (not West) are seen, with other clinics running across the SCAN region at St John’s Hospital, Livingston; Queen Margaret Hospital, Fife (QMH), Borders General Hospital and Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI).
