Lead Electrical Engineer, Burton on Trent

£70k per annum

Location: Burton-on-Trent
Salary: Up to £70,000 per annum
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am – 4pm
Type: Permanent, Full-Time

We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to join a growing engineering team, taking responsibility for the leadership, coordination and delivery of electrical engineering activities across a range of power systems and load bank products.

This is a hands-on position combining technical expertise with team leadership, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with industry standards. The successful candidate will lead and mentor a team of Electrical Engineers while working closely with mechanical, software, production and quality departments to deliver complete engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities of a Lead Electrical Engineer :
  • Lead and coordinate all electrical design activities for power systems and load bank equipment.
  • Develop and define electrical architectures, schematics and system-level designs.
  • Review and approve electrical calculations, technical documentation and engineering drawings.
  • Manage, mentor and support the development of a team of Electrical Engineers.
  • Allocate resources and prioritise workloads to ensure project deadlines are achieved.
  • Oversee the production of wiring diagrams, control panel layouts, cable schedules and bills of materials.
  • Support the design of control systems, instrumentation and safety interlocks.
  • Conduct engineering reviews, risk assessments and failure mode analysis activities.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant electrical, safety and regulatory standards.
  • Provide technical support during prototype builds, testing, commissioning and field-based fault finding.
  • Lead design reviews and act as the key technical escalation point for electrical engineering matters.
  • Support manufacturing teams with build processes, testing procedures and troubleshooting activities.
  • Drive engineering best practice, standardisation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for product enhancement, cost reduction and performance optimisation.
  • Contribute to long-term engineering and product development strategies.

Requirements of a Lead Electrical Engineer :

Essential

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience in electrical design, power systems or industrial equipment engineering.
  • Previous experience leading projects and/or engineering teams.
  • Proven team leadership and mentoring experience within an electrical engineering function.
  • Strong knowledge of three-phase power systems, control circuits, protection devices and grounding/earthing.
  • Experience carrying out electrical calculations including load, fault current, thermal and protection studies.
  • Proficiency with Electrical CAD packages such as EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical or SolidWorks Electrical.
  • Strong understanding of relevant standards including IEC, UL, CE and BS EN.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable

  • Experience with PLCs, controls integration or SCADA systems.
  • Understanding of high-voltage design principles.
  • Experience of FAT, SAT and type testing.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
