Arboricultural Consultant

The role

We are seeking an Arboricultural Consultant to support the delivery of planning-led arboricultural consultancy services across a range of development and land management projects.

The role will primarily involve BS5837:2012 work, including tree surveys, Arboricultural Impact Assessments, Tree Protection Plans, Arboricultural Method Statements and technical input to planning submissions.

You will work closely with clients, consultants, local authorities and fabrik’s wider multidisciplinary project teams.

Key responsibilities

The role will include:

  • Undertaking tree surveys for development sites.
  • Assessing tree quality, condition and development constraints.
  • Identifying Root Protection Areas, canopy constraints and BS5837 retention categories.
  • Collecting and managing arboricultural survey data using OTISS.
  • Preparing tree schedules, tree constraints information and BS5837 plans using KeyTREE and AutoCAD.
  • Preparing or assisting with Arboricultural Impact Assessments, Tree Protection Plans and Arboricultural Method Statements.
  • Identifying direct and indirect impacts on retained trees.
  • Advising on tree protection, construction methods and potential design amendments.
  • Providing clear technical advice to clients, consultants, local authorities and wider project teams.
  • Supporting the preparation of technical information for planning submissions.

Preferred Skills

Essential skills and experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • A strong working knowledge of BS5837:2012.
  • Excellent tree identification skills.
  • Experience undertaking tree surveys for development sites.
  • The ability to assess tree quality, condition and development constraints.
  • Experience collecting and managing arboricultural survey data using OTISS.
  • Experience preparing tree schedules, Root Protection Areas, canopy spreads and retention categories.
  • Experience using KeyTREE to assist with the preparation of BS5837 outputs.
  • Confident AutoCAD and Microsoft Office skills.
  • An understanding of veteran trees, ancient trees and ancient woodland constraints, including the ability to identify relevant features and understand appropriate buffer requirements.
  • A Level 4 qualification, or equivalent, in arboriculture, forestry or a related subject, or demonstrable equivalent professional experience.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Desirable skills and experience

The following would be beneficial:

  • Professional membership of a relevant organisation.
  • Lantra Professional Tree Inspection certification.
  • QGIS experience.
  • Knowledge of BS3998.
  • Experience supporting reserved matters applications or the discharge of planning conditions.
  • Specialist training relating to veteran trees, ancient trees or ancient woodland.
