Rare School Caretaker Vacancy (Southampton, ASAP Start)

A highly regarded Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ school is seeking to appoint a reliable and proactive School Caretaker to join its dedicated premises and support team. This role is to start as soon as possible.

Job Overview

The successful candidate will support the day-to-day operation, security and maintenance of the school site, ensuring buildings, grounds and facilities remain safe, clean and fully operational.

Working closely with the Site Manager and wider school team, you will carry out routine maintenance, site checks, security procedures and general caretaking duties. You will also respond to maintenance issues, assist contractors and help prepare the school site for daily activities and events.

The role will suit someone who is practical, dependable and able to take pride in maintaining high standards across the school premises.

School Caretaker – Experience and Requirements

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• Previous experience in caretaking, facilities management, maintenance or a similar practical role.

• Experience carrying out general building and grounds maintenance.

• Good knowledge of health and safety procedures and safe working practices.

• Ability to identify and report maintenance, security and safety issues.

• Practical skills in areas such as basic plumbing, carpentry, painting and decorating or general repairs.

• Ability to carry out routine site inspections and maintenance checks.

• Experience supporting contractors and external service providers.

• Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a wider team.

• A reliable, flexible and proactive approach to daily responsibilities.

• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

• The legal right to work in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the day-to-day maintenance and security of the school site.

• Carry out routine checks of buildings, grounds, equipment and facilities.

• Complete minor repairs and maintenance tasks where appropriate.

• Ensure the school site is clean, safe, secure and well presented.

• Support the opening and closing of the school premises.

• Assist with the delivery and supervision of contractors on site.

• Report and respond to maintenance, safety and security issues.

• Help prepare rooms and facilities for school events and activities.

• Support health and safety, fire safety and emergency procedures.

• Maintain appropriate records relating to maintenance and site checks.
