Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for ward manager to become part of the team on John Denmark Unit, which is an 18 bedded, deaf specialist, mixed gender acute/rehab unit.

Our ideal candidate would have experience of caring for people with functional illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia etc, and dementia. Experience of working within a deaf mental health residential setting would be desirable.

You will have the necessary skills to lead, support and manage staff, and be visible and accessible to service users and their families. Your skills should enable you to meet the requirements of this demanding post which include balancing operational management, professional leadership, supporting your team and the active development of the service.

You will be a role model and have a clear interest in acute mental health and supporting those who are in crisis. You will ensure staff commitment to good evidence based practice, ensure the delivery of a quality service and that key targets are being met.

Develop and support a culture which values people's rights, enables them to make informed choices and recognises each individual right to a valued life-style, positive social experiences and use of valued resources.

You will promote a least restrictive environment, leading on clinical risk management and person centred care planning.

You will be passionate about your role, and implementing change ideas through QI work streams.

Main duties of the job
The Ward Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ward, supporting and developing staff, maintaining clinical standards, and ensuring effective use of resources. Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will drive quality improvement initiatives, ensure compliance with Trust policies, and contribute to the achievement of key performance targets.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide visible leadership and operational management of the ward.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based patient care.
  • Lead, support, supervise, and develop nursing and multidisciplinary staff
  • Manage staffing, recruitment, appraisal, training, and performance processes.
  • Monitor quality standards and implement service improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee patient flow, including admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Ensure effective risk management, health and safety, and safeguarding practices.
  • Manage ward resources and budgets efficiently.
  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion for patients and staff.
  • Participate in the on-call rota and deputise for senior managers as required.

Education and Qualification
Essential
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN). o Degree qualification or equivalent portfolio of experience. o Evidence of post-graduate training and continuing professional development (CPD).
Desirable
  • o Additional post-registration or specialist qualifications. o Supervisory or management qualification
Skills and Knowledge
Essential
  • Minimum of four years' experience within substance misuse and/or mental health services. oDemonstrable Band 6 experience and experience working within inpatient services. oExperience of leading and developing teams and managing change. oExperience of staff performance management and handling disciplinary issues. oUnderstanding of budget and resource management. oExcellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and people management skills. oAbility to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. oKnowledge of local and national policies relating to deaf mental health services. oUnderstanding of clinical risk management, health and safety, safeguarding, and confidentiality requirements. oExperience of quality improvement, audits, patient flow management, and reducing delays to discharge. oAbility to motivate, empower, and inspire teams to achieve service objectives. oAbility to write clear reports and effectively work with patients, carers, and partner agencies.
Desirable
  • o Previous management experience within an inpatient setting. o Ability to teach and support learning within the workplace. o Knowledge of the physical healthe care needs of people accessing mental health and substance misuse services. o Understanding and practical application of change management processes. o Experience of leading investigations and producing formal reports.
