Research Fellow in Membrane Biophysics (111600-0526)
£35.61k - £46.05k per annumInformal Queries
- For informal queries, please contact Professor Satyajit Mayor at Satyajit.Mayor @ warwick.ac.uk .
You will join the laboratory of Professor Satyajit Mayor in the Centre for Mechanochemical Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences Directorate at Warwick Medical School and work collaboratively to study the crosstalk between proteins and membrane lipid organisation using interdisciplinary approaches.
The Mayor laboratory is one of the leading laboratories, working on understanding basic cellular mechanisms that govern chemical, biophysical and mechanical properties of the cell membrane. This project is a collaboration between single molecule biophysicist, Jay Groves (Department of Chemistry, UC Berkeley) and soft-matter physicist, Madan Rao (National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, India) both of whom has pioneered theoretical and experimental approaches to understand non-equilibrium processes in living cell membranes. We will study the crosstalk of proteins and lipids in health and disease, using interdisciplinary approaches at the cross-roads of cell biology, biochemistry, synthetic biology, imaging and biophysics and theory.
About YouWe are seeking a highly motivated candidate with an honours degree (or equivalent) and a PhD in Biology, Chemistry or Physics or a related field. Applicants should have hands-on experience in experimental biology, particularly expertise in membrane biophysics, or single molecule biophysics. Proficiency in coding and experience with computer simulation packages are essential. The candidate must also have a strong scientific interest, evidence of published research on membrane dynamics, and or experimental biophysics, and excellent leadership and documentation skills to lead and integrate multiple aspects of the project effectively. A self-driven approach and the ability to work independently while contributing to collaborative efforts are key qualities for this role.
Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in as well as expertise in membrane biophysics, single molecule biophysics, or active matter, and/or polymer physics.
Proficiency in coding and experience with computer simulation packages are essential.
For details on the experience and skills required, please refer to the job description attached as a PDF below.
PhD Status
If you are near submission of your PhD, or have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made at Research Assistant level, at the highest spinal point of pay grade 5 (£34,610 per annum).
Upon receipt of evidence confirming the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow , at the lowest spinal point of grade 6 (£35,608 per annum).
About the DepartmentWe offer an outstanding interdisciplinary environment for discovery science in one of the best universities in the UK. The Mayor laboratory is the founding laboratory of the Cellular Interface Cluster (CIC) is a highly collaborative unit withing the Centre of Mechanochemical Cell Biology (CMCB), University of Warwick.
The CIC seeks to understand how the cell structures and organizes its interface with the outside and its neighbouring cells and currently is constituted of six PIs. CMCB seeks to uncover the principles of cellular self-organisation with a focus on the role of mechanics in processes that enable cell duplication, movement, repair and membrane organisation. CMCB is home to 20 principal investigators with backgrounds in cell biology, computer science and physics. It is housed in the Mechanochemical Cell Biology building with state-of-the art imaging facilities.
The post holder will also join Warwick Biomedical Sciences (BMS) division at Warwick Medical School. Areas of research excellence in BMS focus on quantitative molecular, cell and developmental biology, host-pathogen interactions and human reproduction. Collaborations with the Madan Rao’s group at NCBS-TIFR, Bangalore and Jay Groves Laboratory at UC Berkeley provides unparalleled opportunity to be exposed to the application of active matter physics to biological questions.
About the UniversityWe are a world-leading research-intensive university founded in 1965. We are ranked 74th in the world and 9th in the UK. * Additionally, 92% of our research is rated world-leading or internationally excellent .**
