Summary

Access Hire Nationwide is looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice Power Access Engineer to join our engineering team at our Normanton depot.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to begin a career in engineering and learn how to maintain, inspect, diagnose and repair specialist vehicle-mounted power access equipment.

Wage

£22,568 a year

Monthly pay on the 25th of every month- If lands on a weekend or bank holiday, will receive before then.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

You don't need previous experience working with powered access equipment. We are looking for someone with the right attitude, a genuine interest in engineering and mechanics, and the willingness to learn.

You'll work alongside experienced engineers while completing a recognised apprenticeship programme, developing practical skills in areas such as mechanical engineering, electrical systems, hydraulics, diagnostics and fault finding.

As your knowledge and confidence develop, you'll gradually take on more responsibility within the workshop.

What You'll Be Learning:

With training and supervision from our experienced engineering team, you will learn how to:

• Carry out pre-delivery inspections on vehicle-mounted Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs)
• Assist with servicing, maintenance and repair of power access equipment
• Identify and investigate mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults
• Develop diagnostic and fault-finding skills
• Use workshop tools and equipment safely and correctly
• Understand hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems used within powered access equipment
• Follow manufacturer specifications and engineering procedures
• Recognise damaged, defective or potentially unsafe equipment and report concerns appropriately
• Record work completed accurately using the company's workshop systems and handheld tablets
• Identify and record parts and consumables used during repairs
• Understand basic stock-control processes
• ]Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment
• Follow company health & safety procedures at all times
• Work effectively with engineers, technicians, the parts department and other teams across the business

Your Apprenticeship

Alongside your day-to-day role, you'll complete a recognised engineering apprenticeship qualification.

Your training will include a combination of:

• Practical, hands-on experience within our engineering workshop
• Formal apprenticeship training
• Support and mentoring from experienced engineers
• Regular progress reviews
• Development towards working independently as a Power Access Engineer.

What you'll learn

• Produce individual components, sub-assemblies or completed assemblies using mechanical manufacturing techniques
• Carryout quality checks during and after mechanical manufacturing operations
• Wire and terminate different types of cabling e.g. single core, multi core, screened, fire resistant, armoured, etc.
• Assemble and test a range of electrical components e.g. component panels, isolator switches, fuses, circuit breakers, contactors, relays, rail mounted terminal blocks, etc.
• Assemble and test a range of electronic components e.g. resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, etc.
• Follow appropriate completion activities and restore equipment/system to service after the assembly and testing has been completed
• Shape the materials using the appropriate methods and techniques
• Join the materials using the appropriate methods and techniques
• Produce components which meet the specification requirements
• Carryout quality checks during and after the fabrication activities
• Plan the materials, processing or finishing operation before they start
• Prepare equipment, tooling, materials, etc. and complete set up activities before carrying out the materials, processing or finishing operation
• Carry out the material, processing or finishing operation in line with specific safe working practices and specification requirements

Training schedule

You will attend Castleford College on a day release basis across the duration of the apprenticeship, this will be supplemented by a designated assessor who will make regular site visits.

Successful completion of the apprenticeship could lead to progression into a Power Access Engineer position and further specialist training and qualifications.
