Hearing Rehabilitationist (Speech and Language Therapy)

Are you ready for a rewarding new challenge in a specialist hearing implant centre? We are looking to recruit a Speech and Language Therapist to join our enthusiastic paediatric Hearing Implant Rehabilitation Team on a permanent basis. This post provides an exciting opportunity for Speech and Language Therapists to extend and consolidate their professional experience working with infants, children and young people with conductive and severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. The role is varied and will include a combination of joint clinic-based work, stand alone SLT assessments and remote appointments. Main duties of the job
You will provide a specialist hearing rehabilitation service as part of the regional hearing implant programme based at Addenbrooke's Hospital. This involves assessing patients' communication skills to determine suitability for a hearing implant within a multidisciplinary team and supporting the patient with their communication post implantation. The majority of the caseload is with cochlear implants; however work with other hearing implants will also be part of the post. You will be responsible for assessing the communication skills of patients, liaison with local professionals, as well as planning, implementing and evaluating care as a specialist clinician within the hearing rehabilitation team. The post holder will contribute to maintaining and developing pathways of care, and participate in research and audit activity.

Job responsibilities

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • A recognised qualification in speech and language therapy / pathology [or its overseas equivalents] (Bsc / Msc in speech and language therapy / pathology)
  • A recognized Qualification of Teacher of the Deaf
  • Current full practising registration of the appropriate professional regulatory body/bodies without unspent sanctions/ warnings (HCPC and RCSLT (SLT); BATOD (ToD))
Experience
  • Experience of working with children with hearing implants in a range of settings
  • Experience of managing a complex caseload independently
  • Experience of assessing the communication and listening needs of children and analysing the results.
  • Significant post graduate experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist or Teacher of the Deaf
  • Provision of teaching/ training/ supervision to students and other professionals
  • Participation in quality improvement projects. e.g. audit, clinical guidelines, policy.
  • Experience of working professionally with team members and colleagues through liaison, MDT discussions and joint working to ensure quality care is delivered.
  • Joint working within appointments to help facilitate audiological testing as well as provide rehabilitation support to patients and family members
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of cochlear implants
  • Knowledge of the different communication systems available (e.g. BSL/ AAC, total communication etc) and how to support children in their communication development.
  • Knowledge and implementation of current therapy approaches for communication difficulties.
  • A knowledge of assistive listening devices and how they are used to support children in education settings.
Skills
  • Able to prepare and deliver a rehabilitation programme to children with severe to profound deafness
  • Ability to analyse the key needs of an individual and tailor intervention accordingly.
  • Communicate complex sensitive condition related information from assessment to patients, parents/ carers and colleagues.
  • Ability to reflect on own practice and identify areas of personal strengths and areas to develop.
  • Interpersonal skills e.g. negotiation, team working, conflict management
  • Excellent communication skills to enable building good rapports with colleagues, patients and their families
  • Able to use Microsoft office and computer applications
