GENERAL INFORMATION
The Belfast Health Care Trust
The Belfast Trust delivers integrated health and social care to approximately 340,000 citizens in
the greater Belfast area and provides the majority of regional specialist services for the population
of Northern Ireland (1.9 million people). With an annual budget of almost £1.3bn and a workforce
of over 20,000, we are also a Trust with teaching hospitals and have strong links with our local
university partners providing high quality training for medical and other health care professionals
across all disciplines.
Trauma and Orthopaedic Service
The Royal Victoria Hospital has been designated the Regional Major Trauma Centre for Northern
Ireland and is the hub of the trauma network for Northern Ireland. It has one of the largest fracture
units in the United Kingdom, providing a wide variety of specialist services.
Trauma Surgery is provided by 32 of the Orthopaedic Consultants who also work in MPH (see
list below), supported by 8 orthopaedic registrars, 6 Associate Specialists/Specialty Doctors and
8 Core Surgical Trainees with 2 Junior Clinical Fellows and 2 International Training Fellows. The
RVH is both the Regional Trauma Centre and the Regional Spine Unit. Resources include 4
Trauma Theatres and a modern Fracture Clinic. Radiological investigations, including MRI
scanning are available 7 days per week.
Musgrave Park Hospital is one of the largest elective Orthopaedic Units in the British Isles with
approximately 61 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons. It has a total of 129 beds, 94 of which are
elective beds, 20 day-case beds, and 15 paediatric beds. The Theatre Suite has 8 theatres (all
equipped with Clean Air Ventilation Systems with Laminar Air Flow), and one small theatre
suitable for minor procedures. A separate Day Case Unit (1 theatre/2 Procedure Rooms)
opened in 2022. Musgrave Park sees approximately 13,000 new patients each year and
undertakes 8-9,000 operative procedures.

In addition, the hospital works closely with the Orthopaedic ICATS (Integrated Care &
Treatment Service), an intermediate care service provided by trained GPs with a Special
Interest and AHPs.
Each orthopaedic subspecialty is represented e.g., Primary Hip and Knee Replacement, Revision
Hip surgery, Revision Knee and other Knee surgery, Paediatrics, Spinal surgery, Upper Limb
surgery, Foot and Ankle surgery, Limb Reconstruction procedures and Tumour surgery.
The Trauma & Orthopaedic Department works closely with related specialties such as
Rehabilitation Medicine and Rheumatology. Musgrave Park Hospital has a dedicated
musculoskeletal radiology Service on site with CT and MRI scanning facilities.
The specialised service for children with Fractures and Orthopaedic problems is provided on 2
sites – Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children (RBHSC) and Musgrave Park Hospital (MPH) by
Paediatric Orthopaedic staff. Spinal deformity surgery is delivered in RBHSC and RVH. RBHSC
has 3 theatres one with Laminar Air Flow suitable for trauma and orthopaedics cases. RBHSC
sees/reviews approximately 7000 fractures and undertakes 700 operative procedures under
T&O. A virtual fracture clinic has been piloted and delivery of this service continues. AHP are key
to the delivery of paediatric orthopaedic out-patients, DDH and the Ponseti service across both
sites.
Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children (RBHSC) is a 91 plus 12 PICU bedded paediatric hospital
providing medical and surgical services at both district general and tertiary level.
The trauma and orthopaedic service is staffed with 7 Consultants, 3 specialist registrars and a
core trainee who works alongside clinical nurse specialists in DDH and fractures and 2 advanced
physio practitioners.
Both Musgrave Park Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital provide Outreach Orthopaedic and
Fracture clinics to outlying hospitals.
Hospital Profiles
Belfast City Hospital (BCH) is a major teaching hospital, most of which is housed within the
Tower (opened in 1985). The Northern Ireland Cancer Centre opened on the campus in March
2006 providing for the development of an internationally recognised Cancer Centre. A strong
strategic focus on molecular medicine, cancer and renal services has enabled the development
of world leading research programmes and a leading Cancer Clinical Trials Unit linked with the
ROI and the NCI Washington DC in a tripartite arrangement. There is a modern radiology
department and substantial AHP Services (eg Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Occupational Therapy,
Speech & Language Therapy, Nutrition & Dietetics, etc) and a comprehensive range of pathology.
The Royal Hospitals is the largest hospital complex in Northern Ireland, comprising the Royal
Victoria Hospital, the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital (RJMH), the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick
Children (RBHSC) and the School of Dentistry. It provides virtually all referral services in Northern
Ireland. Major re-developments of the Royal Hospitals are underway, which includes the Royal
Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and a new maternity hospital is at an advanced stage of
construction. A new Critical Care Building with Emergency Department and operating theatres is
due to open in the near future. The Royal Hospitals play a major role in clinical education, training
and research, with most academic departments linked to the Queen’s University Medical School
on the Royal Hospital’s complex – Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Child Health, Obstetrics
and Gynaecology, and Pathology.

The Royal Hospitals is a Level 1 Trauma Centre and supports the Northern Ireland Trauma
Network and Northern Ireland Air-Ambulance Service.
The Mater Hospital is a university teaching hospital providing Acute and General Medicine,
Cardiology, HPB Surgery, Gastroenterology (including ERCP and Spyglass), Obstetrics &
Gynaecology and Psychiatry. There is a 24 hr A&E department and a 6 bedded Intensive Care

JOB SUMMARY / MAIN PURPOSE
The post holder will join the existing appointees in providing a Trauma and Orthopaedic Service
for Northern Ireland, specialising in Arthroplasty or Upper Limb surgery. In addition, the post
holder will contribute to the care of patients at Musgrave Park Hospital (MPH) and Royal Belfast
Hospital for Sick Children (RBHSC), and take part in the on-call Trauma rota at RBHSC. It is
expected that the successful candidate will take up post by Summer 2022
This 12 month post has been developed to help deal with increasing fracture Out-patient and In-
patient demand, partially arising from an increase in the Paediatric age limit to 16, and to
contribute to elective care recovery, following COVID, in line with the Department of Health
Elective Care Framework. As such, the posts will require flexibility in delivering clinical
commitments, such as clinics and lists
The post provides ample opportunity for mentoring of a new Consultant Appointee by more senior
Consultant Colleagues.
The ability to work in a team is an essential attribute for Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons. Daily
Fracture Ward-Rounds occur daily in RBHSC, with a weekly Arthroplasty Multi-disciplinary
Meeting in MPH and regular Multi-disciplinary Meetings in related specialties, such as Upper Limb
surgery. Complex cases may lend themselves to dual surgeon operating. This facilitates case
review and discussion. The successful candidates will be expected to participate in these
meetings and encouraged to build on and expand on such meetings, for the benefit of the service.
The Trauma and Orthopaedic team are also leading the way in trying to improve the patient
journey. Outpatient Clinics will evolve to become multi-consultant specialty clinics attended by a
number of other allied health professionals that the appointee must be able to work with closely,
including specialist nurses, physiotherapists and ICATS practitioners. It is essential that any
appointee is capable of building upon these links and taking them forward in the future.
One Consultant is on-call for RBHSC, at the weekend for scheduled Ward Rounds and
Emergency Trauma operating as needed.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The postholder will:
1. Assist the existing appointees in providing Orthopaedic Elective Lower limb surgery or

the Trauma and Orthopaedic units.

the Elective and Trauma units.

practised by the consultants in posts.

expertise are maintained. The Trust is committed to fully supporting and resourcing

colleagues and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
The post holder is expected to work within the Trust’s Clinical Governance Framework and
GMC guidance on good medical practice.

research interests relevant to this post. The Trust has a Clinical Governance Department

as staff in related disciplines and to co-operate with colleagues in developing local
educational programmes.

required arrangements in place to ensure that all surgeons have an annual appraisal with
a trained appraiser and supports surgeons going through the revalidation process.
