Data & AI Engineer

An established organisation in Aberdeen is seeking a Data and AI Engineer to design, develop and support secure, scalable data and artificial intelligence solutions across its business.

Reporting to the Digital Solutions Lead, you will help improve reporting, automation, knowledge discovery and data-driven decision-making. Working with stakeholders across engineering, projects, finance, operations and corporate functions, you will translate business requirements into practical, maintainable technical solutions.

The role offers broad exposure across cloud data engineering, analytics, automation and applied AI. You will develop data pipelines, integrations and analytical data products, alongside AI-enabled applications such as enterprise search tools, knowledge assistants, document intelligence solutions and workflow automations.

You will work primarily with Microsoft Fabric, Azure, Power BI, Python, SQL and APIs, helping the organisation improve data quality, accessibility and governance. The position is based in Aberdeen, with occasional visits to other company locations or suppliers’ premises where required.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Design, build, test and maintain secure data pipelines and integrations across operational, project, financial and corporate systems.
• Develop scalable cloud data solutions using Microsoft Fabric and Azure, including lakehouse, warehouse and data integration components.
• Create reusable data models and curated datasets to support Power BI reporting, analytics, automation and AI use cases.
• Develop controlled AI-enabled applications, including enterprise search, knowledge assistants, document intelligence, summarisation and workflow automation.
• Build prototypes and production-ready solutions using Python, SQL, APIs and relevant Microsoft technologies, supported by testing, monitoring, version control and documentation.
• Work with business stakeholders to define viable use cases, improve data quality and governance, and evaluate emerging technologies through structured pilots and recommendations.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

• Practical experience building data pipelines, integrations or data platforms using Python and SQL.
• Experience using Microsoft Fabric, Azure data services or a comparable cloud-based data platform.
• A sound understanding of data modelling, ETL/ELT, APIs, data quality, and structured and unstructured data processing.
• Experience applying software engineering practices, including version control, testing, documentation and deployment.
• Practical knowledge of AI and machine-learning concepts, including generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic systems, prompt design, evaluation and responsible use.
• The ability to translate business requirements into secure, maintainable technical solutions.
• A degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
