Dental Nurse Apprentice

£15.6k per annum

Summary

Genix Health Care are looking for an enthusiastic, hardworking individual to join their team at their practice in Whitley Bay as an apprentice Dental Nurse. The successful candidate will work towards a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing and will support with the day-to-day running of the surgery as well as reception when required.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • To clean and provide basic routine maintenance to the surgery equipment
  • To ensure that all instruments are clean and sterilised
  • To pass instruments to the dentist during procedures
  • To prepare instrument trays and materials to use for procedures
  • Assist the dentist with chair side duties
  • To develop x-rays and file appropriately
  • Monitor surgery stock items
  • To dispose of all clinical waste in a safe and appropriate manner
  • Change cold sterilisation fluid as recommended by the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Maintain autoclave water levels and ensure they are drained of water at least once per week
  • To assist with maintaining patient records up to date when required
  • To maintain hygiene standards across the clinic
  • To act as a witness/chaperone
  • Prepare impressions for dispatch to the laboratory
  • Maintain cleanliness of all filters/suction/hand piece turbines
  • Ensure all health and safety issues are maintained within the practice
  • To act in a discreet and confidential manner relating to business/personal issues
  • Patient confidentiality must be adhered to at all times

  • Identify relevant and appropriate dental, oral, craniofacial, and general anatomy, recognising the diversity of anatomy across the patient population.
  • Evaluate the health risks of prescribed, non-prescribed and recreational drug use and misuse on oral and general health.
  • Evaluate the scientific principles underpinning the use of materials and Biomaterials, their limitations and selection, with emphasis on those used in dentistry.
  • Identify the signs of abuse, neglect or emotional trauma, explain local and national systems that safeguard the welfare of children and adults.
  • Identify the signs of normal and abnormal facial growth, physical, mental and dental development milestones and explain their significance.
  • Assess patients’ levels of anxiety, experience, and expectations in respect of dental care and oral health.
  • Contribute to relevant special investigations and diagnostic procedures.
  • Undertake orthodontic assessment.
  • Obtain valid consent from patients explaining all the relevant factors and taking into account the legal requirements where appropriate within scope of practice.
  • Record an accurate and contemporaneous patient history.
  • Accurately record dental charting as carried out by other appropriate registrants.
  • Accurately record an oral health assessment.
  • Prepare records, images, equipment and materials for clinical assessment.
  • Process and manage dental radiographs and images.
  • Manage patient anxiety appropriately, effectively, and safely.
  • Monitor, support and reassure patients through effective communication and behavioural techniques.

  • Make arrangements for follow-up care as prescribed by the operator.

  • Day release at our Training Facility in Newcastle once a week

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)
