Specialist Nurse for Child Protection Medical Team

Job summary
The post holder will provide expert child protection knowledge and skills as part of the Community Paediatric Medical Service (CPMS) consisting of the Children Looked After Team, Child Protection Service, and Community Paediatric Service, delivering commissioned services in Portsmouth. The role is responsible for coordinating and supporting child protection medical assessments for children and young people where there are concerns regarding abuse, or harm. Medicals will be undertaken at the Queen Alexander Hospital, Portsmouth, with the on-call Community Paediatricians. The role will include supporting the Doctors with appropriate investigations and assessments. The post holder will be required to demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, working collaboratively with social workers, carers, parents, and police officers throughout highly sensitive and complex child protection assessments. The role requires the ability to engage effectively with multiple agencies, ensuring a child-centred approach and the delivery of safe, high-quality safeguarding services.

Main duties of the job
The Child Protection Medical Nurse is a key member of the Community Paediatric Medical Service (CPMS), providing specialist nursing support for child protection medical assessments and safeguarding activities. The post holder coordinates and facilitates medical examinations for children and young people where there are concerns of abuse or harm, ensuring assessments are delivered in a timely, child-centred, and trauma-informed manner. Working closely with community paediatricians and multi-agency partners, including Children's Social Care, police services, health professionals, carers, and families, the Child Protection Medical Nurse supports the assessment process through clinical preparation, evidence collection, documentation, information gathering, and coordination of investigations. The role requires a high level of professional judgement, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage sensitive and complex situations with empathy and professionalism. The post holder contributes to safeguarding practice, promotes the welfare of children and young people, and ensures that services are delivered in accordance with local and national safeguarding policies, procedures, and statutory guidance.

Job description
Job responsibilities
  • Accepting referrals following liaison with medical colleagues.
  • Coordinate CP medical timescales.
  • Liaison with the multi-agency network and the wider medical team to book the appointment.
  • To meet and greet the families/children/social workers at Childrens Assessment Unit, Queen Alexander Hospital.
  • To provide nursing support for the Doctor during the child protection medical.
  • Offer support and advice to professionals, children and families throughout the child protection process.
  • Assessment and analysis of highly complex information that may be emotionally distressing and highly contentious.
  • Management of highly charged emotional issues to identify risk to children.
  • Knowledge and skills in recognising indicators of child abuse.
  • Apply knowledge of child protection processes into practice.
  • Specialist knowledge of forensic and child protection procedures to support the paediatrician and family during the assessment.
  • Coordinate and manage follow-up assessments and investigations as required.
  • Attend strategy meetings and child protection conferences as required.
General
  • Promote effective liaison with professionals from health and other agencies at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
  • Ensure effective and appropriate care is in place, and where necessary, to communicate complex and highly sensitive information to children, young people and their carers including those with learning difficulties or where English may not be their first language.
  • Ensure that contemporaneous, accurate and clear records are made at all times.
  • Use specialist clinical skills in assessing and analysing need, referring, and developing care plans for children and young people in complex situations.
  • Empower parents/carers/young people to access appropriate health provision for children and themselves, offering support and information when required.
  • Act as an advocate for children and young people ensuring their views relating to their health & wellbeing are heard.
  • Provide advice regarding appropriate use of primary care and other health services.
Management and Leadership
  • Provide supervision and support, where required, to junior members of staff and other bands including Health Care Support Workers.
  • Staff are supervised appropriately, and standards of work are maintained and Trust policies for the management of staff performance are adhered to.
  • Where appraisals of staff directly supervised are undertaken and that the appraisal process is maintained throughout the team.
  • Staff receive appropriate health and safety and other mandatory training as prescribed and that relevant records are maintained.
  • Other records are maintained by the team ensuring compliance with the agreed record keeping systems of the Trust.
  • Informed consent is obtained where appropriate and documented in accordance with Trust procedures.
  • New and replacement equipment is not used until it has been commissioned in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Appropriate risk and other assessments are completed and documented in a timely manner in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Defective equipment is reported and made safe without delay in accordance with Trust procedures.
  • Equipment is maintained in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Infection prevention and control procedures are followed by all staff within their area of responsibility.
  • All staff follow Trust clinical governance requirements.
Administrative
  • Work positively with colleagues to maintain effective relationships, incorporating Trust values.
  • Contribute to reporting for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, highlighting the effectiveness of health care planning and progress toward performance indicators.
  • Implement, participate in and analyse audit within the service to improve future service provision.
  • Participate in ongoing research and development within the team as appropriate.
  • Ensure mandatory training is accessed as detailed by the Trust policy.
  • Engage in annual appraisal process to support individual career and personal development.
Education
  • Working with Clinical Team Coordinator and Named Doctor for Safeguarding or equivalent professional will provide direct supervision and mentoring.
  • Be aware of own professional development requirements and undertake learning and development opportunities.
  • Attend education and training courses relevant to field of practice in order to further develop competencies.
  • Develop skills relevant to area including developmental assessment using recognised tools, history taking physical assessment and examination skills
  • Training will be offered to support this role.
