CYP ADHD/Autism Waiting Well Practitioner

About the Role
We are recruiting a skilled and motivated Band 6 ADHD/Autism Waiting Well Practitioner to join our Neurodevelopmental Service on a 12 month fixed term basis working 22.5 hours per week.

This role focuses on providing high-quality telephone-based support, triage, and clinical oversight for children and young people awaiting ADHD/Autism assessment.

You will play a central role in ensuring safe waiting list management, early identification of risk, and timely support for families. You will also supervise and guide Band 4 Associate Practitioners who deliver routine Waiting Well check-ins and engagement calls.

This post is ideal for a practitioner with strong clinical judgement, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to improving the experience of families waiting for neurodevelopmental assessment.

Core Professional Requirement
Applicants must hold a recognised core professional qualification and current registration with one of the following:
  • NMC (Registered Nurse - Mental Health, Learning Disability, or Child Branch)
  • HCPC (e.g., Occupational Therapist, Practitioner Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist
  • Social Work England eg Social Worker
Applicants without a core profession cannot be considered for this Band 6 post.

Main duties of the job
What You Will Be Doing
Leading clinical triage of neurodevelopmental referrals, applying risk tools and determining RAG ratings.Providing telephone-based support, psychoeducation, and advice to parents and carers.Delivering supported parent/carer clinics.Offering guidance on reasonable adjustments, strategies, and available support while families await assessment.Providing clinical supervision and oversight to Band 4 Associate Practitioners.Supporting multi-agency communication with education, Early Help, social care, and third-sector partners.Contributing to service development, pathway governance, and quality improvement initiatives.Ensuring high-quality documentation and adherence to the Waiting Well and Waiting Safely Policy.

We are looking for someone who:
Holds a core professional qualification and current registration (NMC, HCPC).Has experience working within neurodevelopmental, CAMHS, education, or related settings.Demonstrates strong clinical judgement and the ability to manage risk remotely.Communicates clearly, professionally, and sensitively with families and partner agencies.Is confident in leading triage processes and supervising junior staff.Can work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.Is organised, proactive, and able to manage a varied workload.Is committed to improving the experience of families waiting for assessment.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered nurse / Registered with Heath Care Professionals Council (HCPC) in a discipline relevant to the service
  • Degree in health care field or equivalent experience in the health care field
Desirable
  • Training in the use of specialist diagnostic assessment tools related to neuro-developmental difference
  • Enthusiasm to attend masters level postgraduate courses relevant to the specialist area
Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
  • Post registration knowledge that is relevant to the specialist area
  • Ability to assess / plan / evaluate care to young people and families
  • Support families in crisis
  • Demonstrate excellent record keeping
  • Demonstrate ability to chair meetings and contribute to team discussions
  • Ability to deliver training to other professionals and services
  • Knowledge of national and local priorities and changing trends in the specialist area
  • Working knowledge of child protection issues
Desirable
  • Experience with quality initiatives
  • Ability to manage conflict situations to an amicable resolution
  • Confidence / experience in managing potentially challenging situations
Experience
Essential
  • Post registration experience of working with autistic individuals
  • Direct experience of working with people with complex needs (i.e. co-existing differences and difficulties)
  • Experience of undertaking projects
Desirable
  • Experience of teaching and mentoring others
  • Experience of working with autistic children and young people in a variety of mental health services.
