Job Overview
We are currently recruiting an experienced and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to join a well-regarded Independent Specialist Day College in Stoke. The college supports approximately 230 young people aged 16–25 with moderate to profound learning difficulties and complex needs, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). All students have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and the college is supported by Hearing Impairment (HI) and Visual Impairment (VI) services.
This role focuses on enabling students to develop essential communication skills that will support them in achieving greater independence, pursuing employment, and participating meaningfully in their communities after college. You will play a vital role in a collaborative team of teachers, teaching assistants, and communication specialists.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Deliver specialist assessments, therapy interventions, and contribute to EHCP evaluations and reviews.
Develop tailored communication programmes and ensure they are implemented effectively by support staff.
Set, monitor, and evaluate individual communication targets to track student progress.
Liaise with families, carers, and external professionals to ensure consistent support across settings.
Provide formal and informal training, including handover sessions, to education staff and TAs on delivering interventions.
Work closely with a multidisciplinary team including 3 TAs, 2 teachers, an AI specialist, pathway leads, and curriculum heads.
Use and promote communication tools and approaches including Makaton, AAC, and person-centred communication methods.
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, you must have:
A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
Current HCPC registration.
Experience working with young people with learning disabilities, autism, and complex communication needs.
