Registered Midwife - Band 5

Job summary
To provide to the local population evidence-based women-centred midwifery care and be accountable for the overall provision of excellent care. To hold current NMC registration as a Midwife, working within the NMC Code of Professional Standards (2018). To be a competent midwife, working flexibly within the Midwifery Service and be confident working as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing high-quality antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care within our integrated maternity service.

Eligibility for these posts is restricted to newly qualified midwives who have successfully completed a midwifery training programme in England and hold relevant NMC UK registration, or to third-year student midwives who have undertaken their training in England and are currently working towards completion of their degree, with expected NMC UK registration by December 2026. This reflects the allocated funding available through the Graduate Guarantee.

Main duties of the job
We are seeking experienced and motivated midwives with a strong foundation in evidence-based midwifery practice and a commitment to delivering high-quality, woman-centred care. Candidates should demonstrate sound clinical knowledge across the full maternity pathway, including antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, with the ability to recognise and respond to emergencies promptly and effectively.

You will bring excellent communication, critical-thinking and decision-making skills, working confidently as an autonomous practitioner while contributing positively within the multidisciplinary team. Proven experience in supporting normal birth, managing complex cases and promoting safe, compassionate care is essential. Applicants should be adaptable, organised and able to thrive in a dynamic environment, with a proactive approach to maintaining professional development and promoting best practice.

Job responsibilities
Midwifery Care

• To provide the full range of midwifery support and care, which includes antenatal, one to one care in labour and postnatal care, liaising with midwifery colleagues, obstetric consultants and other relevant members of the multi-disciplinary team when appropriate
• To be competent in the full range of midwifery skills, including: venepuncture, maternal and neonatal resuscitation, care of regional anaesthesia and infant feeding support.
• To undertake the MDT Preceptorship at GHNHSFT and become competent in the additional skills such as cannulation, perineal suturing and intravenous drug administration.
• To participate in any on-call rota as required.
• To assess the mothers and babys condition and deliver appropriate care, within the multidisciplinary team.
• To carry out appropriate screening tests on women and babies, following appropriate discussion with the woman and informed consent.
• To be able to diagnose / recognise specific problems and make decisions in the provision of care related to pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period, informing the most suitably qualified person to assist in the provision of care in the event of any deviation from the norm.
• To deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using equipment and resources safely and as appropriate.
• To provide health education and support with parenting skills to individuals and/ or formal and informal groups.
• To communicate effectively, adapting and tailoring to meet the needs of the patients, families and MDT colleagues.
• To receive information which may cause emotional distress to all parties and disseminates contentious, complex and sensitive information appropriately.
• To maintain accurate and contemporaneous records.
• To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and Midwives Rules and Standards.
• Always maintain womens dignity and confidentiality.
• Demonstrate and promote a person/family centred, holistic style of clinical practice.
• To be responsible for the organisation of own caseload and appropriately delegate to support workers or other staff members to ensure effective time management. To assist the team in the day to day running of the clinical area.
• To communicate with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to aid effective woman-centred care, which will include taking an active role in team meetings, joint consultations and case conferences as required.
• Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support. Whilst supporting the woman, family and other staff as required.
• To communicate effectively, with women and families, potentially complex, sensitive or distressing information; to provide family centred care.
• Be responsible for the protection of safeguarding of children with an awareness of child protection procedures
• To act as a mentor for midwifery learners and newly qualified midwives.

Qualifications and Training
Essential

• Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with degree or diploma (or expected to be active by December 2026 following successful completion of a Midwifery Degree)
• Newly qualified midwife who has successfully completed a midwifery training programme in England and hold relevant NMC UK registration, or to third-year student midwives who have undertaken their training in England and are currently working towards completion of their degree, with expected NMC UK registration by December 2026.
