We are growing our theatre teams! Are you an experienced and motivated Theatre Recovery Practitioner ready to take the next step in your career?

Spencer Private Hospitals are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Theatre Recovery Practitioner Band 6 to provide specialist care within our busy operating theatres.

The post holder will perform and assist in all aspects of surgical post-op recovery procedures to an expert level in line with personal competencies. The post holder will work with the surgical team in delivering and maintaining a high standard of surgical care after surgery.

Spencer Private Hospitals undertake a multiplicity of surgical procedures which include but are not limited to general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, ENT and colorectal patients.

The Theatre Recovery Practitioner is clinically responsible to the Anaesthetics Lead- working under direction and supervision as a member of the surgical team.

Main duties of the job

Key areas/Tasks:
To work within the recognised role and framework as published by the Royal College of Surgeons for Surgical Care Practitioners and adhere to their voluntary code of conduct (RCS The surgical team 2014)

To provide competent, skilled assistance to the operating surgeon during the post-operative period, undertaking advanced practice and highly specialised skills required for a wide spectrum of cases.

To have specialist and expert knowledge of human anatomy/physiology in relation to the surgery being undertaken.

Support and promote the development of clinical capability within your team and its application in delivery of service outputs.

Utilise appropriate tools, routines and behaviours to coach and develop the capability of your team to do a little every day to improve and deliver exceptional care aligned to the Spencer Hospitals strategic priority domains.

You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care and maintaining professional standards within the post-operative theatre setting. This is an exciting opportunity for a compassionate, forward-thinking, experienced recovery practitioner who is ready to be part of a skilled team, with a family atmosphere.

Management and Leadership
  • To effectively participate in the implementation of changes, which may be required by the organisation.
  • To liaise with consultants regarding post-operative clinical preferences, techniques, procedures and equipment requirements and bring, where necessary, the same to the attention to the Anaesthetics Lead.
  • To define the recovery staffing requirements for theatres to fulfil current and future clinical and business requirements.
  • To allocate workloads to staff which are appropriate to their skill, experience and competence.
  • To instruct recovery staff so that they understand their individual professional obligations and responsibilities as laid down by the Professional Codes of Conduct.
  • To monitor clinical practice to ensure that clinical standards conform to the Professional Codes and to the standards required by the hospital.
  • To provide direct supervision and coaching to junior staff in their work planning and their clinical practice as appropriate to their experience and competence.
  • To control the allocation and flow of work in the recovery department so that standards are preserved, and services are provided to other departments and customers in a timely fashion.
  • To record and maintain accurate and comprehensive information on staffing and workload.
  • To maintain excellent communication within all departments of the hospital and the NHS Trust.
  • To provide hands on clinical duties to maintain and develop quality of service.
  • To identify, plan and implement service development opportunities to grow the volume and profitability of the service in line with targets set by the Anaesthetics Lead.
  • Provide advice and guidance to the pre-assessment team to ensure patient safety.

  • To monitor practice against policies and procedures relating to high-risk activities, to ensure that they are implemented and accurately practised
  • Maintain excellent relationships with all Consultant and medical staff to resolve problems and identify opportunities
  • To maintain patient care standards and to effectively implement changes to care delivery systems, methods and nursing practice to facilitate improvements in the quality of care
  • Participate in research and audit and to implement actions identified from quality initiatives
  • Lead and support the recovery team through the process of change demonstrating tenacity, drive, professional integrity, balance and perspective
  • Act as an advocate for patients within theatre care, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within relevant guidelines

To formulate theatre policies and procedures and ensure same are ratified and updated in accordance with SPH policy

To attend Head of Department meetings, Clinical Governance, Health & Safety meetings and disseminate information in the absence of the Anaesthetics Lead

Maintain written records of objectives, action plans and evaluation of programmes

To create, in conjunction with the Theatre Team Lead, a professional, friendly working environment reflecting the needs of patients, individual consultant users and members of the teams

To identify theatre activities of high criticality in terms of risk management

To maintain a quality service by facilitating the setting, maintaining and monitoring of standards

To contribute to the analysis and investigation of incidents, accidents and complaints and to implement action plans to prevent recurrence

To work to ensure that all aspects of product liability are incorporated into formal working practices

To establish and maintain effective storage and retrieval systems for information

To always present and project a professional image in terms of uniform, appearance and personal conduct
