An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education to join our vibrant, creative academic community in the School of Social Work, Education and Teacher Education.
The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Primary Education will contribute significantly to the delivery, development and leadership of high-quality Initial Teacher Education in the Primary ITE phase. The successful applicant will possess expertise across a range of subjects within the Primary National Curriculum and will be responsible for teaching, mentoring and supporting trainee teachers to develop strong pedagogical, subject knowledge and classroom practice.
The post holder will contribute to course leadership, partnership development, research and scholarship activities, quality assurance processes, and the continued enhancement of the student experience. They will work collaboratively with school partners, colleagues and external stakeholders to ensure courses reflect current educational policy, research and best practice. The post holder will, as part of our team, be responsible for contributing to all aspects of the ITE Curriculum for the Primary Initial Teacher Education courses, including a strong understanding of SEND and Inclusion but with a particular focus on teaching the Primary Foundation Subjects.
About the Role
Working with the Head of Primary, Course Directors and Module leads, the post holder will contribute to the success of the school in the delivery of ITE Curriculum (Primary), enhancements to trainee teachers’ experience, student recruitment, and take on some leadership aspects of Phase operations.
The post holder must be comfortable in working and contributing to an interdisciplinary context and have the necessary subject expertise to support trainees’ understanding of how children progress within primary school through KS1 and KS2 and how many subjects connect across the National Curriculum.
The post holder’s role as an Academic Tutor contributing to Undergraduate and Postgraduate Primary Education (3-11) with QTS courses will also involve supporting and assessing trainees in their academic award and professional recommendation of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
About You
- A good first or 2.1 degree in a relevant discipline and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Extensive knowledge and successful experience of primary teaching and the primary curriculum
- An excellent teacher with demonstrable interest in pedagogic innovation
- Excellent interpersonal, networking, communication and IT skills
- A secure knowledge of education policies in relation to primary education and training, including the ongoing changes to teacher education and the school system in England.
- A secure understanding of on-going support and training needs of trainee teachers and ECTs.
- Experience of working with ITE trainees or in Higher Education
- An ambition to develop a research and publication profile.
- A good understanding of the changing HE landscape and its relevance to the Primary Phase
Key responsibilities
- Design, deliver and evaluate outstanding teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate primary teacher education courses.
- Lead and contribute to curriculum areas across a range of Primary National Curriculum subjects.
- Model effective teaching practices and evidence-informed approaches to learning.
- Develop innovative teaching resources that support trainee teachers' subject knowledge and pedagogical expertise.
- Teach across both university-based and school-based training elements of . The ability to drive and own your own car would be helpful for your work in schools.
- Support students in developing inclusive teaching practices that meet the needs of all? learners.
- Supervise dissertations, independent research projects and practitioner inquiries.
- Undertake academic tutoring and provide pastoral support to students.
Driving is a desirable requirement - the successful person will be asked to complete work as a link tutor in our schools and so will need to drive to schools (close in distance ideally to their home), to support the mentoring and trainees who will be on their school experience placements in school.
How will you work?
Candidates need to be available to work Monday - Friday, with some flexibility at certain points of the year (e.g. August Clearing (3 days) and some Saturday Open Days). There is some flexibility to work from home on non-teaching days.
