The Systems Manager is responsible for the support, configuration, optimisation and continual development of key clinical and corporate systems across the Trust, including the Ophthalmology Electronic Patient Record (OpenEyes). The role acts as the technical and service owner for designated systems, ensuring safe, effective and compliant operations and acting as the bridge between project delivery and business as usual.

The post holder will be responsible for the support, configuration and continual development of the Ophthalmology Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system across Milton Keynes University Hospital along with other bespoke systems within the Surgical Division.

The Ophthalmology EPR system, OpenEyes, is scheduled to be introduced into the Trust in 2026/27. The Project Manager will lead on programme delivery and governance, while the Systems Manager will act as the technical and service owner, taking on business as usual responsibility after go‑live. The Systems Manager will support delivery activities but does not hold ownership of the overall programme plan.

You will work closely with the Ophthalmology service, the Trust’s IT
helpdesk and wider support teams, plus the external service supplier of OpenEyes and EPR system.

You will be located on-site between the main Hospital and Lloyds Court and attend other hospital sites to fulfil the role. Hybrid/home working is anticipated, with a minimum of 3 days on MKUH sites.

The post holder is a key member of the IT leadership team with a dotted line to the Surgical Division. You will have an extensive understanding of application configuration, deployment, support, training, maintenance, and testing in an NHS Trust setting. The role is responsible for providing leadership, guidance, support or specialist knowledge to the key stakeholders and the Systems functions.

The role includes responsibilities such as, configuration, access, supplier management, incident/problem/change processes, reporting, upgrades, continuous optimisation, data quality, information governance, service roadmap, vendor management, financial management, and consistent service improvement for the Systems within the Surgical Division.

This role will support the Surgery Division in the delivery of business-as-usual objectives relating to the Systems & Development service. The role will also be responsible for working with the Clinical Systems Project Team on projects relating to the relevant clinical systems and interfaces.

It will involve regular communication with internal and external stakeholders or suppliers. The post holder will provide expert technical advice, strong leadership and clear direction to the organisation, Digital Leadership team and stakeholders.

You will work to establish and maintain excellent relationships with other partners and stakeholders.

This role is responsible for a number of complex functions and their delivery or performance, these include: -
Taking over Business-as-usual in new EPR systems such as Open Eyes into the organisation, working with IT, Clinicians, Service/Operational Managers and Project Managers.
Supporting large scale application upgrades and replacements.
Responsible for the development of a renewal and upgrade schedule for Trust’s digital applications.
In collaboration with the other System Managers develop or maintain the Systems & Development service policies or procedures to increase efficiency, enhance workflow and improve customer satisfaction.
Coordinate the needs of in-house Digital experts, remote employees, vendors and contractors.
Communicate clearly with administrative staff, health care staff and vendors when required.
Work closely with business leads to determine the Clinical Systems, training & deployment service maintenance and growth needs.
Provide Clinical Systems advice or guidance to the business, the technical teams and the programme teams.

Proactively manage the service delivery, supporting the system as required to facilitate / assist or resolve any system related issues, liaising with internal IT support and 3rd party suppliers where required.

Participate as a member of the Ophthalmology and other services, including team working as required.
