Overview :

Veterinary Officers in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps protect the health of military working animals and support food safety across The Army. You’ll play a vital role in caring for service animals, including military dogs, while also helping safeguard public health through food and environmental protection.

You’ll work in a variety of settings in the UK and overseas, advising commanders, supporting operations and leading specialist teams. It’s a role for compassionate, confident veterinary professionals who want to use their expertise in a unique environment, while developing leadership skills and gaining experience far beyond traditional practice.

Qualifications required

To join as a Veterinary Officer , you must:

  • Hold a veterinary degree recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)
  • Be registered with the RCVS
  • Be eligible to join The Army as a commissioned officer
  • Meet Army officer entry standards , including medical and fitness requirements

Veterinary Officers can join at different stages of their career, with opportunities to specialise, gain further qualifications and take on leadership roles while serving.

Student Bursary (Up to £60,000):

If you’re studying for an Army‑endorsed veterinary degree, you may be eligible for a student bursary of up to £60,000 to support you while you train.

The bursary is open to students who plan to join the Royal Army Veterinary Corps as a Veterinary Officer for a minimum of four years after qualifying.

How the bursary is paid

  • £5,000 per year during your final three years at university
  • A £45,000 lump sum after you successfully complete Officer training

During your two years of professional development, you may also receive either a full Army salary or a £5,000 lump‑sum payment each year, depending on your training pathway.
