Lead CPET Physiologist

The role of the Healthcare Scientist is to provide a high quality, patient focused, efficient Respiratory Physiology service within Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The role is expected to work alongside the administrators in the sleep and CPAP teams in a cross cover model.

This role involves following departmental operating procedures to provide a patient focused, high quality, efficient and complete required diagnostic and follow up lung function testing. You will be working within a multidisciplinary team and support routine clinical service.

NB: Due to UK apprenticeship funding regulations applicants must have a right to work in the UK, or for EU citizens hold pre-settled or settled status and have been a UK or EU resident for the last three years or have indefinite leave to remain with documents that are not due to expire during the duration of the apprenticeship contract. Applicants must also not already have a qualification at a higher level within the same subject matter.

Main duties of the job
The main duties of the job are:

Communication
Ability to demonstrate excellent customer care skills, greeting patients visiting the Heart & Lung Department according to trust values, assisting flow through the department. To ensure that patients and visitors receive a friendly and professional service, always demonstrate patient confidentiality. Contribute to departmental discussions and work towards Directorate and Trust objectives, participate in service and cost improvement programmes.

Administrative
Demonstrate planning, good organisational and prioritising skills, assist with elements of local induction for new starters. Day to day diary management using departmental computer programmes, deal with internal and external correspondence, coordinate patient activity through the department, liaise with physiologists, clinic, ward areas and other diagnostic services. Ensure electronic filing and departmental staff e-rostering systems are kept up to date, book follow up appointments, develop and maintain departmental administration policies and procedures, contribute to data inputting, coordinate ordering of stationery items and managing stock levels and administration support to management team as well as reporting respiratory function investigations.

Qualifications
Essential

• Post-graduate degree (minimum MSc) in science-related subject
• Registered with the Health Professions Council or similar statutory/voluntary regulatory body
• Certificate of attendance at national/international CPET course

Desirable

• Management and/or Leadership qualification
• Current up to date Good Clinical Practice certificate

Experience
Essential

• Demonstrable experience of assisting and/or leading CPET services
• Previous experience of working as a Respiratory Healthcare Science Specialist/Senior Respiratory Physiologist
• Experience of interpreting simple to complex tests of respiratory physiology
• Previous experience of assisting with developing, reviewing and implementing departmental policies and procedures
• Practical and theoretical knowledge of all respiratory physiological assessments from simple to complex
• Knowledge of exercise physiology
• Ability to communicate often sensitive and contentious information to a variety of individuals including patients, to include those with learning and other disabilities, healthcare professional colleagues, medical staff and individuals external to the Trust, for example manufacturers of lung function testing equipment
• Ability to record and input sensitive data from simple to complex investigations into electronic databases
• Proficient in the use of all Microsoft Office applications

Desirable

• Experience of presenting results of translational research to national and international scientific meetings
• Evidence of experience in departmental research trials including assisting with protocol development, data collection and analysis
• Line management of junior healthcare scientists
• Experience in performing and interpreting lung function and CPETs utilising SentrySuite software
• Knowledge of conducting respiratory research through devising research projects, collecting data, analysing results and preparing manuscripts for publication into peer-reviewed journals
