Cable Project Engineer

£850 per day
Temporary

Our client has an exciting opportunity for a Cable Project Engineer to join a multi‑disciplined engineering team, supporting the development and delivery of an expanding project portfolio aligned with Net Zero targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide cable engineering support across multiple projects by producing or reviewing outline cable system designs during development phases. This includes assessing technology options, selecting underground cable routes, producing current‑rating calculations (e.g., CYMCAP), and evaluating interface requirements.

  • Support the full project life cycle, including design development, HAZID/HAZCON/HAZOP risk sessions, construction, installation, commissioning, and project completion. Work collaboratively with engineers and managers to identify and mitigate engineering and quality risks, support informed decision‑making, and conduct peer reviews.

  • Work across disciplines to ensure designs are safe, efficient, and compliant with our client’s standards and wider industry requirements.

  • Develop technical scopes and specifications for new underground cable projects and modifications to existing assets. Responsibilities include reviewing cable system prequalification and type‑testing reports, verifying contractor/consultant detailed cable system designs, and witnessing factory and site acceptance testing.

  • Promote and manage Safety by Design throughout the engineering process by ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations, ESQCR, and relevant HSE legislation, embedding good design practices and lessons learned.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in a relevant engineering discipline, ideally Chartered or working towards Chartered status.

  • Demonstrable experience in transmission development, design and specification, with the ability to technically assess issues and critically evaluate engineering solutions.

  • Experience working on the Transmission Network with extensive knowledge of high‑voltage cables and a strong understanding of legal and regulatory obligations for transmission assets.

  • Proven experience working within multi‑disciplinary project teams on transmission or major infrastructure projects.

  • Strong technical understanding of relevant legislation and its implications for transmission network management, including CDM and ESQCR.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to support senior leadership decision‑making. Able to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, building strong and lasting professional relationships.
