About The Role

Purpose of the Job

To monitor environmental aspects of Brett operations such that the requirements of ‘authorisations to operate’, Group procedures and relevant legislation are met and environmental risks are identified, measured and reported.

To carry out monitoring and investigation to support development and remediation projects, permit closure and surrender and to confirm operational compliance.

Provide support to SHE Department in investigating any issues, auditing sites and seeking to maintain or achieve compliance.

Main Responsibilities/ Tasks

• Undertake monitoring duties (e.g. soil gas, groundwater, discharges, surface water and dust) to an approved schedule and standard at various sites within the Brett Group. Grab, bailed and pumped techniques.
• Liaise with laboratory and courier staff to ensure supply of correct sample containers, sample dispatch.
• Provide care, calibration and maintenance for technical equipment, monitoring 4x4 or other vehicles, and dingy/trailer ‘owned’ by the monitoring team.
• Provide care, calibration and maintenance for site based technical equipment e.g. continuous water and dust monitors.
• Audit condition of all field monitoring facilities and maintain / repair where appropriate. Maintain access to boreholes through a schedule of seasonal vegetation clearance using a brush cutter and other tools.
• Liaise with surveyors regarding changes to monitoring location position/elevation and request / assist with update survey or periodic resurvey.
• Input field data into excel / bespoke database, ensuring accuracy and clarity. Provide/update basic trends as required e.g. ‘quality control’, for periodic reports or for input into other projects.
• Undertake closed landfill inspections as required by site permits.
• Input to procedures / SSW, and associated documents related to job function.
• Co-ordinate updates to risk and COSHH assessments.
• Assist in delivery of the QHEST audit programme (second auditor)
• Undertake any other specific tasks which may reasonably be required from time to time e.g. reports or studies associated with development sites, site closures and surrenders.
• Undertake any training required for the role including technical and auditor training, brush cutter, weed spraying, 4x4 and power boat competence.

Performance Standards

• All necessary monitoring completed to satisfactory standard and on time.
• All samples collected in correct containers, correctly labelled and dispatched within appropriate timescale on all occasions.
• All equipment to be in clean, working order and calibrated / serviced as required. Standard of care to ensure longevity of equipment.

• All routine monitoring locations to be readily accessible, identifiable / numbered, and in good working order. General repairs to be carried out, significant repairs /replacements to be actioned through contractors/drillers.
• Borehole plans, incl. lone worker routes, and borehole survey information to be up to date.
• Field data input to systems within 24hr of task completion and checked as correct on every occasion. Graphical/tabular data trends or summaries to be to standard/presentation style set through training and instruction.
• Site inspection forms to be submitted within 24 hours of inspection. Issues logged as incidents or NMs on IFS as appropriate.
• Procedures and assessments updated in accordance with timescale specified in relevant QHEST procedures, or other legislation/guidance issued by the regulator.
• In line with training and QHEST audit procedure and programme. Note: this element has scope to offer a further development opportunity.
• Satisfactory passes in formal courses. Positive trainer feedback.

Areas/ Sites to be covered

Active, closed and development sites across wider Brett Group business area, including Jersey, although predominantly in the south, southeast and east of England.

Major Job Challenges/ Any other relevant information

• To fit in all the work required with careful planning and organisation but maintaining flexibility to respond to last minute changes.Working remotely with some significant travel and in variable weather conditions. Working on and near water bodies, amongst livestock, and dealing with a wide range of people.
• Understanding and working with bespoke IT systems, specialist databases and automatic monitoring systems.
• Willingness to develop technical knowledge, having a ‘can do’ / ‘can solve’ attitude and an eye for detail are the key success factors.

Knowledge and Skills

  Essential

• Willingness to work autonomously in the outdoors and in all weathers
• Aptitude for practical tasks / problem solving
• Flexibility regarding hours & place of work (sites cover a large geographical area in SE)
• Good standard of written English, numeracy and accuracy
• Has good attention to detail
• Competent user of MS Office software including Excel
• Communication & interpersonal skills
• Planning & organisational skills
• Ability to work alone and in a team, confident in independent work in both the office and site environment
• Full driving licence
• Physically able and willing to take on manual tasks

Desirable

• Previous experience of environmental monitoring
• CIWM Landfill, Leachate, Groundwater, monitoring courses
• Recognised training in off-road driving and use of powered craft
• Recognised qualifications in safe use and maintenance of brush cutters & strimmers
• Experience of contractor control
• Experienced in undertaking risk and COSHH assessments
• Experience (1-2 years) in a practical/site-based role
