Job summary
We are looking for a qualified, HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with Histology experience to join the Scarborough, York and Hull Pathology Service (SHYPS) network working on the Hull site in Cellular Pathology.

Biomedical Scientists are responsible for performing a wide range of scientific procedures and result interpretation on biological samples that contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and the investigation of other pathological processes.

As a Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will contribute to the organisation of work in a consultant led department as part of a team, supervising support workers and Associate Practitioners and performing work activities in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.

The post holder will have the knowledge and skills to use individual judgment to make decisions that will have an impact on the end product in order to facilitate the provision of accurate and timely reports within available resources. They will be expected to liaise with senior staff in forward planning.

The post holder will be expected to have upheld the professional standards required by registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Experience of compliance with standards such as ISO 15189 would be advantageous.

This is a full time role which will require an element of flexibility on a day to day basis.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as a qualified HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist within the Cellular Pathology department. They will need a good understanding of the importance of Cellular Pathology on patient treatment and care.

The post holder will need to be computer literate and aware of patient confidentiality. They will need good communication skills and good attention to detail as well as an ability to organise and prioritise their own workload.

An up-to-date knowledge of histological techniques and procedures is essential. As part of their role the post holder will supervise and train Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants within the Histology laboratory.

Education, Qualifications and Training
Essential
  • IBMS accredited BSc in Biomedical Sciences or alternative equivalent with top up
  • Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC
Desirable
  • Other relevant professional or vocational qualification(s) e.g. IBMS Specialist Diploma
Experience and Knowledge
Essential
  • Previous experience of working in a pathology laboratory environment
Desirable
  • Experience of working in a Cellular Pathology laboratory
  • Experience of using laboratory information systems
Skills and Attributes
Essential
  • Attention to detail and excellent communication skills
Desirable
  • Previous experience of undertaking analytical work in a Pathology discipline
