Locum Consultant Cardiologist Interest in Cardiac Electrophysiology

Job summary
This is a locum appointment, intended to maximise utilization of the infrastructure. The remit of the postholder will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for adult patients with cardiac arrhythmias from King's, the local community, and referring hospitals. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff. The post-holder will be asked to participate in the EP on call rota and may be expected to undertake outreach clinics. The post-holder will be expected to part-take in the consultant-of-the-week in-patient ward cover. Main duties of the job
The post will be based at both Denmark Hill. The proposed Job Plan is outlined in the Job Description. There will be an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities. There is no on-call commitment for general cardiology, but the post-holder will participate in an out of hours arrhythmia on-call service (currently 1 in 6). As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients. - The provision of a first class clinical service
- Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
- Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London
- Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
- Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans
- Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust

- Together with the other cardiac electrophysiologists, to provide a service for arrhythmia care. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
- Shared responsibility with the other arrhythmia specialists for providing out of hours cover for the arrhythmia services. This is currently a 1 in 6 rota, shared with the other electrophysiologists, and the rota will be arranged so that the locum appointment can cover for leave/absence.
- Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
- To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
- To contribute to the Audit Programme.
- To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
- To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for cardiac services.
- To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
- To undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Clinical Director.
- To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
- To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
- To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.
Qualifications - Essential
- Registerable medical qualification
- Full MRCP
- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
- Full Registration with GMC
- Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
- Wide experience in all aspects of cardiology, culminating in award of CCST or equivalent.
- Specialist training in cardiac electrophysiology
- Independent operator for diagnostic EP studies, and both standard and complex catheter ablation.
- Independent operator for trans-septal
- Demonstrated subspecialty interest and experience, including complex ablation.
- The post-holder should be ready to perform basic AF ablation (by wide area circumferential ablation) and cardiac resynchronization/conduction system pacemaker implantation procedures independently.
- Experience in complex syncope clinics
- Experience in day-to-day organisation of Cardiac services in a busy Teaching Hospital
- Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills
- Familiar with current structure of UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes

- Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
- Management course and/or qualification
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
- Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.
- Audit Publications
- Experience of clinical research in one or more aspects of cardiac arrhythmia care
- Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
- Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Cardiology
- Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.
- Teaching skills course/qualification
