Corporate Health and Safety Officer

Job description

Reporting directly to the Corporate Health & Safety Manager, you will be the on-the-ground champion for corporate safety systems, safe working practices, and a positive wellbeing culture. You will act as a visible, collaborative partner to our frontline Housing and Assets teams and expanding Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) - delivering practical guidance, toolbox talks, and safety assurance. By engaging directly with managers, and colleagues, you will help reduce risk and prevent incidents to ensure our workplaces, housing schemes, and communities remain safe and compliant.

Responsibilities

• Organise, schedule, and conduct regular risk-based health and safety inspections, including housing with care premise.
• Carry out operational, task-based, and workplace risk assessments with teams to evaluate risks, help develop practical control measures, and manage the documentation and administration of risk assessments.
• Deliver engaging internal safety training, toolbox talks, and induction programmes for colleagues, including the expanding DLO, tailored specifically to housing-sector risks such as lone working, while coordinating and scheduling sessions in liaison.
• Assist the Corporate Health & Safety Manager in fulfilling their building management duties at Northern Whig House and Hub Offices by operating as an internal point of contact for day-to-day health and safety compliance queries.
• Help develop and implement corporate health and safety policies and procedures, assisting directly with drafting, formatting, and distribution to ensure staff compliance.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

• Minimum of NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) and 2 years’ experience in a dedicated health and safety role.
• Ability to demonstrate practical experience of carrying out health and safety inspections and operational risk assessments.
• Experience in health and safety delivery within a property, social housing, construction, or maintenance environment.
• Practical experience or clear understanding of workplace accident/incident investigation, root-cause analysis, and safety data administration.
• Proficient in using digital workflows, mobile check forms, or modern health and safety compliance software to input data and support users.

Desirable Skills

• A recognised instructional qualification (e.g., Train the Trainer, Award in Education and Training).
• Professional membership (or actively working towards membership) with an accredited safety body (e.g., TechIOSH or CertIOSH status).
