The School of Medicine is seeking to appoint a Clinical Senior Research Fellow/Honorary Consultant based at the Office for Rare Conditions Registries in the Office Block on the Royal Hospital for Children/Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus. The Office for Rare Conditions (ORC) Registries comprises of global rare disease registries (e.g., SDMregistries and GloBE-Reg) that support research and quality improvement projects across the world.
Job Purpose
The role of the job focusses on maximising and sustaining the use of these resources to make a substantial and positive contribution towards the strategic direction of the ORC by leading and contributing to research of international standard, securing research funding, undertaking teaching and research supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and providing academic leadership and management within the School and College. The postholder will actively engage in developing relationships with other groups within the University as well as external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.
In addition, the postholder will contribute to clinical care with an allied clinical specialty under an NHS honorary contract at consultant level.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Academic
1. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy.
2. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.
3. Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including Knowledge Exchange, which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the University.
4. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality course/programme administration, setting and monitoring standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams (beyond subject/school level).
5. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes.
6. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally.
7. Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the Office for Rare Conditions Registries.
8. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.
9. To collaborate with colleagues and participate in meetings, discussions, seminars and research group activities as appropriate.
10. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
12. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing the World’.
Clinical
13. To contribute to clinical service provision at the level of Honorary Consultant with a special interest in a subspeciality of paediatrics within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde that aligns with the research interests of the Office for Rare Conditions
14. Ensure compliance with annual appraisal and GMC/GDC NHS revalidation. Participation in NHS/University Joint Appraisal Scheme is a condition of employment for all medical academic staff. In accordance with the Follett Report, recommendations for participation in a joint appraisal arrangement will be agreed locally.

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD or MD) or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the field of rare conditions.
A2. Possess or completing CCT (or equivalent) within 3 months of application.
A3. Recognised clinical and research expertise in rare conditions and the resources available in the Office for Rare Conditions.
A4. Relevant and enduring membership of General Medical Council/General Dental Council.
A5. A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/ College level.
A6. Sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.
A7. Engagement with the current and future priorities of the Office for Rare Conditions Registries strategies, aims and ambitions.
A8. Membership of a relevant professional body.

General Information
The Office for Rare Conditions Registries at the University of Glasgow is an academic and clinical research hub focused on building and coordinating rare disease registries to enhance scientific knowledge, support international collaboration, and ultimately improve patient care for rare conditions. The Registries team works with international partners and affiliate registries to broaden data sharing, oversight, and quality standards across rare disease datasets for its two platforms, GloBE-Reg and SDMregistries. The Office for Rare Conditions Registries is led by Professor Faisal Ahmed and comprises clinical scientists, data specialists, project support staff and research staff and students. Their responsibilities include data governance, quality assurance, software support for registry platforms, and leading as well as fostering research that uses registry data to understand and improve outcomes in rare diseases.
Further Training
The additional training that will be available in this post will be targeted, role-specific and developmental focusing on independence, leadership and sustainability. The objective of this training will primarily be strategic and related portfolio development. Training will be provided in grant writing, development of funding strategies and managing budgets. Training will also include exposure to leading committees and working groups and line management and performance appraisal of the staff at the Office for Rare Conditions Registries. Opportunities for development of further data related research skills will be encouraged.
Clinical Work
For registered medical practitioners an honorary grading at a first-year consultant level and an Honorary Contract will be sought from the NHS. Limited day time clinical experience, approximately 20%, may be available subject to the agreement of the Project Lead and NHS Services Clinical Director. Where any clinical activities of a Service nature extend beyond the usual working week, confirmation in advance of any such responsibilities and agreement on additional payments must be obtained from appropriate NHS Services management. The individual will have a contract with the NHS Services via the appropriate directorate/ division, which will specify the agreed amount of clinical work and the level of remuneration.
Funding Sources
The duration of funding is as specified in the post-specific information. It will be awarded on the basis of individual career achievement to date and the likelihood of the fellow contributing to an effective, existing research team. Salary will be aligned with the appropriate NHS Consultant scale.
Research Base
The fellow will be based at the Office for Rare Conditions Registries in the Office Block on the Royal Hospital for Children/Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus.
Teaching
There will be no regular commitment to teaching but all clinical academic staff are encouraged to contribute to clinical teaching sessions for undergraduate medical students when research commitments allow.
Assessment of Progress
Assessment of progress will occur through written progress reports on projects on a monthly basis, reports/manuscripts of results of clinical studies undertaken, as appropriate, general assessment during clinical work and meetings, internal progress meetings and professional appraisals.
Terms and Conditions
An honorary consultant contract will be applied for from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with an associated salary from £111,430 - £148,064 per annum pro rata on the New Consultant Contract (NCC) Scotland. Further payments may be made by the NHS for clinical activity e.g. a clinical EPA, Discretionary Points, Merit Award and/or Availability Supplement, if eligible.
This post is part time (20 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 2 years.
