SEMH Teaching Assistant

A specialist SEN school in Clayton is seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their supportive team from September. This is a full-time, long-term opportunity until the end of the academic year, supporting pupils with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs within a specialist education setting.
The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting pupils who may experience barriers to learning due to emotional, behavioural, and social difficulties. Working closely with class teachers, pastoral staff, and the wider support team, you will help create a safe, structured, and nurturing environment where pupils can develop confidence, emotional regulation, and positive relationships.
Key responsibilities:
Providing 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and social development
Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and learning
Assisting with the implementation of individual behaviour plans, EHCPs, and support strategies
Supporting pupils to access learning and develop independence within the classroom
Using a trauma-informed and restorative approach to support pupil wellbeing
Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams, and external professionals
Encouraging positive behaviour, resilience, and confidence throughout the school day

The successful applicant will:
Have experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural, or additional needs
Be confident managing challenging behaviour and supporting emotional regulation
Be calm, patient, resilient, and consistent in their approach
Have excellent communication and teamwork skills
Be proactive and able to build positive relationships with pupils
Have the right to work in the UK and full-time availability from September
Experience using restorative approaches, Team Teach, MAPA, or similar behaviour support strategies (desirable)
Hold a valid Enhanced DBS Certificate (Child and Adult Workforce) registered on the DBS Update Service (essential)
