The East Anglian Regional Radiation Protection Service (EARRPS) is a high-quality scientific and technical advisory service in the field of radiation protection and diagnostic radiology physics. We are looking for three Senior Clinical Scientists, specialising in radiation protection and diagnostic radiology physics to join our service.
The service promotes systems of work that ensure the safety of patients, visitors and staff when using ionising and non-ionising sources of radiation such as x-rays, radioactive materials, lasers and UV cabinets. A wide range of services are provided including, imaging equipment performance testing and optimisation, radiation facility design and environmental monitoring, patient radiation dose assessment, regulatory audits and advice, instrument calibration, radioactive waste management and, teaching and training.
You will be responsible for leading and coordinating specific areas of the service depending on skills and experience.
Main duties of the job
You will be a HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist with significant experience in the delivery of diagnostic radiology physics and radiation protection services. You must be qualified to act as a Medical Physics Expert in relevant modalities and/or a Radiation Protection Advisor (or have sufficient knowledge and experience to apply for the relevant certification within 6 months of appointment). You will operate within both our HSE-recognised RPA Body and our ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System.
A passion for service delivery is essential along with an ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others. You must have excellent communication skills and experience of multidisciplinary teaching and training. You will be required to travel throughout the region on a regular basis and may be asked to work from other hospitals in the region, depending on service developments and individual circumstances.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
Honours degree in a relevant subject.
MSc. in Medical/Radiation Physics (or equivalent).
HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
Certification as a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) and/or Medical Physics Expert (MPE) (or likely to gain such certification within 6 months of appointment).
Desirable criteria
Certification as other qualified expert i.e. RPA and/or MPE and/or Radioactive Waste Advisor (RWA) and/or Laser Protection Advisor (LPA).
Membership of, and involvement with, relevant professional body.
PhD degree.
Experience
Essential criteria
Sufficient knowledge and experience of radiation protection legislation to be able to act within an HSE-recognised RPA Body.1
Demonstrable experience in interpreting different situations and judging measures required to ensure regulatory compliance in areas related to the use of ionising radiation in healthcare.
Specialist experience in the assessment of x-ray imaging equipment and judging measures required to ensure compliance with legislation and recommended performance standards.
Experience of teaching and training on a range of topics relating to radiation protection to a range of professional groups.
Desirable criteria
Knowledge and experience of radioactive waste disposal and environmental radiation protection.
Experience of working with and advising on the requirements for the safe use of non-ionising sources of radiation.
Experience of working within a Quality Management System.
Experience of the use of computer systems, networks etc. within an imaging environment.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
Expert knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare & biomedical research relating for both the use of x-ray and radioactive materials.
In-depth understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (e.g. IRR, IRMER, ISO 9001:2015, BSI, NAIR, EPR, REPPIR, MHRA/IPEM/NHSE guidance)
Extensive knowledge of dosimetry methods for exposures to ionising radiation.
High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from ionising and non-ionising radiation exposure.
Specialist knowledge of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of state-of-the-art X-ray imaging equipment.
Understanding of hazards posed by, and precautions needed with: ionising radiation, non-ionising radiation, radioactive materials, infected materials (clinical and putrescent radioactive waste), electrical hazards.
Desirable criteria
Expert level knowledge and understanding of ICT infrastructure requirements for clinical systems.
In-depth understanding of the requirements for the approval of medical exposures used for research processes.
