Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a recently qualified Speech and Language Therapist to develop their skills and experience in Learning Disabilities.

The Speech and Language Team (SaLT) work as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering a high-quality specialist services to individuals with Learning Disabilities.

This role will work across Learning Disabilities to meet the communication and dysphagia needs of this client group. You will be a person-centred SaLT who is committed to advocating for and meeting the needs of Adults with a Learning Disability.

You will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide specialist assessment to adults with speech, language and communication needs. You will need to be a skilled assessor who can create speech and language therapy treatment plans support, care plans and interventions that are co-produced with the people you support. You will use clear evidence-based practice to meet the person's needs, with identified clinical effectiveness and outcome measures. You will need excellent communication skills that are adaptable to each person's needs.

Main duties of the job
If you are a dedicated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist, who is keen to learn, we can support you to tailor your current clinical skills to working in this role. You will have access to regular caseload and clinical supervision, plus a meaningful annual appraisal that supports you to plan and achieve goals.

The people that we support are individuals and our approach is always person-centred. Working autonomously, the role will be varied and include assessment, planning and implementing evidence-based practice, reviewing and evaluating therapy using therapy outcome measures, provide advice to other professionals regarding the management of clients with communication and dysphagia needs, modifying materials, attending and contributing to MDT and clinical team meetings, report writing and completing administrative tasks relevant to the role.

You must have a Speech and Language degree qualification and be registered with the HCPC. Membership to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists is desirable.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy degree or equivalent
  • RCSLT and HCPC Registered Speech & Language Therapist
Desirable
  • NQ communication competencies completed
  • Dysphagia competencies completed
Experience
Essential
  • Experience in working in a health or social care provider organisation as a qualified or student Speech & Language Therapist
  • Relevant SLT student placement (e.g. ALD, ASC, Special School, secure setting)
Skills
Essential
  • Knowledge of national policies and procedures (relevant to the client group)
  • Clinical reasoning skills
  • Able to work with service users who present with a degree of challenge
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Clinical/ technical skills for assessment techniques and interventions, i.e. integrated listening, observational and interpretative skills
  • Well organised
  • Highly motivated & able to engage with service users & carers to improve outcomes
  • Ability to work independently and collectively
  • Reflective practitioner

  • Signs and symbols knowledge
