Technician

SRUC Veterinary Services processes approximately 600,000 samples each year from farmers and veterinary practitioners across the UK. As a Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting animal health diagnostics and health schemes by managing samples throughout their lifecycle, from receipt and registration through to reporting and customer communication. You will provide technical, administrative and customer support within a fast-paced laboratory environment, ensuring samples are processed accurately and efficiently in accordance with Quality Management System (QMS) procedures and UKAS accreditation requirements. The role also includes supporting laboratory automation systems, equipment maintenance activities, and providing functional supervision and guidance to Laboratory Assistant/Administrators.,

  • Receive, assess, register, process and distribute veterinary diagnostic and health scheme samples.
  • Maintain accurate records and enter results using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and health scheme databases.
  • Provide first-line customer support, responding to enquiries from farmers, veterinary practices and other stakeholders via telephone and email.
  • Investigate and resolve sample, testing and reporting queries using technical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
  • Support the training, development and day-to-day supervision of Laboratory Assistant/Administrators.
  • Assist Team Leaders with operational, technical and administrative activities to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Develop positive working relationships with customers and external partners, delivering excellent customer service.
  • Support quality assurance activities and ensure compliance with the QMS and UKAS standards.
  • Undertake basic data management and administrative activities, including finance-related support where required.
  • Work to demanding deadlines, ensuring timely processing and reporting of customer submissions.
  • Equipment and Automation Support
  • Coordinate servicing, calibration, maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain equipment records and support troubleshooting of technical issues.
  • Provide first-line support for laboratory automation and liquid-handling robotic systems.
  • Liaise with suppliers, engineers and internal stakeholders to minimise operational disruption.
  • Support equipment validation, workflow optimisation and implementation of new automated processes.
  • Assist in the investigation of equipment or automation-related issues and support corrective actions.

    Minimum SCQF Level 5 qualification (or equivalent), including English and Mathematics, and preferably a science-based subject, with significant practical laboratory experience including sample handling.

    SRUC Veterinary Services provides disease surveillance and analytical testing via our Veterinary and Analytical Laboratory and our network of disease surveillance hubs situated throughout Scotland. We provide national veterinary disease surveillance for the Scottish Government and collaborate with APHA to support statutory disease control schemes.
