MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assessment of the hearing ability of individuals within a wide range of patient groups using various audiological techniques, which will include the use of specialised equipment and methods and be clinically accountable for clinic reports and treatment plans.
- Assessment of patients with balance disorders using highly specialised equipment and be clinically accountable for clinic reports and treatment plans.
- Reporting of findings to a wide range of colleagues, both within the NHS and to external statutory and non-statutory bodies. Reports are expected to contain recommended courses of action where appropriate.
- Participate in and advise (within the scope of the postholders knowledge) on service development, treatment/intervention types and equipment procurement for the department.
- Use of SystmOne and all other internal recording and reporting systems
- Provide in-depth knowledge and understanding of the effects of hearing loss for patients, their families and carers and other organisations.
- Providing patient centred care and support for individuals, relatives and carers who may have special needs and other physical disabilities, and who may have barriers to communication.
- Maintaining a professional, compassionate and polite manner at all times.
- The post holder is responsible for accurate keeping of patient records and information, inputting clinical data and reports into the Audiology departments computer database.
- Some knowledge of computer databases and information technology networked systems is required for this post; training will be given for software specific to the area of work.
- To communicate in an effective and timely manner using both the written and spoken word in a wide range of situations where barriers to effective communication may exist.
- To work in collaboratively within our multi-disciplinary team to deliver a co-ordinated, multidisciplinary service and to assist others to deliver their services.
- To participate in the activities of representative professional bodies, to the advantage of the department, the hospital and the Trust and to the benefit of Audiology Service users.
- To ensure that their statutory mandatory training is up to date in line with the requirements of the post.
- To use techniques of practice review and reflection, in conjunction with supervision and appraisal to develop own and colleagues work performance.
- To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients and organise this caseload effectively and efficiently having regard for clinical priorities and departmental resources.
- To negotiate resource allocations at outreach clinics with local managers to effectively manage clinical caseloads.
- The post holder will be expected to be able to carry out front-line diagnostic and troubleshooting evaluation of audiological equipment, repair when appropriate and referral to others with greater specialist knowledge when appropriate. A high degree of judgement is implied in this requirement.
Qualifications
Essential
- The post holder will provide Clinical Audiology services consistent with an experienced member of staff who holds a BSc (Hons) in Audiology, or BAAT parts 1 and 2.
- The post holder is required to have substantial clinical experience subsequent to entry-level qualification, with at least two years post-qualification experience within a busy hospital setting including supporting ENT services.
- It is desirable that applicants should be AHCS registered, and be registered with the BAA or BSA.
