Personal Tax Trainee

Job Purpose

To support the Tax team based in Stevenage by delivering high-quality compliance services to a portfolio of individual clients. The role involves assisting with preparation of tax returns, maintaining client records, and developing technical knowledge within UK personal taxation.

Key Responsibilities

· Assist with the preparation of self assessment tax returns for individuals, including: Sole traders, company directors, partnerships and landlords and investment clients.

· Gather and review client information, ensuring completeness and accuracy.

· Input financial data into tax software and reconcile to supporting documentation.

· Calculate basic tax liabilities

· Monitor deadlines and assist in ensuring compliance with HMRC filing requirements.

· Prepare correspondence to clients and HMRC.

· Support the tax team with ad hoc administrative and technical tasks.

· Maintain up-to-date and organised client files (electronic and paper where applicable).

· Liaise with clients to request information and resolve routine queries.

· Keep up to date with changes in UK tax legislation through training and self-study.

· Assist with MTD compliance

· Request information for and prepare P11ds

· Preparation of sole trade accounts

Skills and Experience

Essential:

· Basic understanding of UK personal tax principles (through study or experience)

· Strong attention to detail and accuracy

· Good organisational and time management skills

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel and Outlook)

· Clear and professional communication skills (written and verbal)

· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Desirable:

· Previous experience in a tax or accountancy practice (placement or junior role)

· Familiarity with tax software (e.g. IRIS, CCH, TaxCalc or similar)

· Studying towards ATT
