Tree Surveyor

3 Month Contract With A Local Authority

Job Purpose

To undertake the inspection, surveying and assessment of Council-owned trees and accurately record all findings within the Council’s asset management system (Confirm Arboriculture) using mobile technology.

The postholder will be responsible for assessing tree condition, identifying defects, pests, diseases and associated risks, and recommending appropriate management actions to ensure the safety, health and sustainability of the Council’s tree stock. The role requires the ability to make sound professional judgements, take ownership of decisions and clearly communicate findings to colleagues, contractors, residents and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive inspections and surveys of Council-owned trees across the borough.
  
• Assess tree condition, structural integrity and associated risks in accordance with industry standards and best practice.
  
• Identify and record tree defects, pests, diseases, disorders and other factors affecting tree health.
  
• Accurately collect, record and maintain tree survey data using the Confirm Arboriculture asset management system and tablet-based technology.
  
• Make professional recommendations for tree maintenance, pruning, removal, replacement and other arboricultural works.
  
• Prioritise works based on risk assessments and service requirements.
  
• Assist with the management of the Council's tree asset database and ensure data integrity is maintained.
  
• Undertake site inspections in response to enquiries, complaints, insurance claims, emergencies and service requests.
  
• Support the investigation of tree-related incidents and provide technical advice where required.
  
• Monitor completed tree works and ensure they have been undertaken to the required standards and specifications.
  
• Liaise with residents, contractors, elected members and other stakeholders regarding tree management matters.
  
• Provide clear and professional explanations for decisions relating to tree management and recommended works.
  
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, health and safety requirements, environmental regulations and arboricultural best practice.
  
• Contribute to the protection and enhancement of the Council’s tree stock and wider environmental objectives.
  
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of arboricultural practices, legislation, pests, diseases and industry developments.
  

Requirements

Essential

• A recognised Arboricultural qualification relevant to the duties of the role.
  
• Minimum of three years' experience working within the Arboricultural industry.
  
• Good working knowledge of:
  • Tree biology
    
  • Tree identification
    
  • Arboricultural practices
    
  • Pests, diseases and disorders affecting trees
    
  • Tree risk assessment
    
  • Tree work operations and their impact on tree health
    
  • Ecology and environmental considerations
    
• Experience carrying out tree inspections and condition surveys.
  
• Ability to assess tree-related risks and make sound professional recommendations.
  
• Experience using asset management systems, databases or mobile inspection technology.
  
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  
• Ability to explain technical decisions clearly and professionally.
  
• Ability to work independently and manage a varied workload.
  
• Good IT skills, including use of tablets and digital reporting systems.
  
• Full UK Driving Licence.
  

Desirable

• Experience using Confirm Arboriculture.
  
• Professional membership of the Arboricultural Association, Institute of Chartered Foresters or similar professional body.
  
• Tree Inspection qualification such as LANTRA Professional Tree Inspection (PTI).
  
• Experience working within a Local Authority environment.
  
• Knowledge of Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), Conservation Areas and relevant tree legislation.
