Transcona Centennial Pool was designed for the Canada's Centennial in 1967. The site has since developed into a multi-function recreational centre, including adjacent baseball diamonds and hockey arena. The new outdoor pool opened in 2017 to coincide with Canada's sesquicentennial.
The building, sited parallel to Kildare Avenue, mediates the zone between the baseball diamond to the west and the pool to the east. This provides a natural vantage point over the entire outdoor pool area and splash pad. The taller volume to the west houses the mechanical equipment for the new outdoor pool. The lower volume houses change rooms, washrooms, and staff/storage areas. The change rooms are shifted towards the north to animate the locker area and main circulation space along the street front. The area under the canopy provides a shaded gathering space for pool patrons.
The wood cladding softens the building within its residential context. The cladding is treated with a process that polymerizes the wood to resist water and insects, and will develop a silver finish as it weathers. The sun-shade canopy is fabricated in galvanized steel to resist weathering and painted white to provide a bright, clean finish.
